17 December 2015 : Stick Or Twist Again
When Yeovil Town's Board of Directors made the decision to dispense with the services of Paul Sturrock on December 1st, they were always going to have to face a decision far greater than that which involved telling Luggy to leave the building. As is often the way in football, it is far far easier to demand "Joe Bloggs Out!" against a chairman, owner, manager or player than it is to guarantee that you're going to bring in an alternative that will fix the thing you decided was broken.

Broadly speaking, when a club is apparently underperforming, there are three separate possibilities. The first is that the manager or his style is not working well with the players, and that you can therefore remove him and hopefully see an immediate improvement with the playing squad under new management. The second possibility is that the manager is good in his tactics and training methods, but that the players recruited don't come up to scratch and that you could have brought in a better squad than you did. The third possibility is that the manager's recruitment was actually as good as he could have managed within the constraints of his playing budget - even the best manager in the world is going to flunk if there's no money to recruit players at the going rate for the division that you're in.

Of course, the truth is generally more complex than just Category 1, 2 or 3. However, towards the end of Sturrock's reign I got the impression from Yeovil fans that they saw Category 1 - the manager or his style - as being the failure point. There's been some grumbles about individual players, but even in our title winning and promotion winning seasons, there's always been players singled out by fans, and often in a way that doesn't match my view of a game - usually when teams lose games, you can pick out four, five or six players making errors. At that point you either concede "the opposition are better than us" or that there was a collective ripple effect going on throughout the team that can't be pinned on individuals. If Category 1 is the failure point, then in theory you should see some improvement by changing the manager, but if there isn't an improvement, it may imply that it was the players (Category 2) or the funding (Category 3) that was more at fault.

Much like the last few seasons, under multiple managers, Yeovil Town have been "sort of okay" in many matches, but either the lack of a creative spark, or a defensive error or two has cost us points. In particular, not being able to play consistently across a 90 minute period has been a key feature. The match on Saturday against Barnet was a key example of that - earlier in the season against Exeter City, Luton Town, Cambridge United and Dagenham and Redbridge earlier in the season we were guilty of giving teams two or three goal head starts, whilst against Morecambe and Carlisle United we started off those games extremely well and then fell away (although with the Morecambe fixture a red card affected that). Starting games well, or ending games well is all very fine but if during the poor patch of the match you let a couple of goals in, then you're probably not going to come out on top - of the above matches, Luton was the only game that we came out of with maximum points. Whoever manages the team going forward will have to unravel that part of the club's game at present.

The wider question is of course who should be charged in solving that problem, and any others lurking around the surface. Whilst the various media outlets were getting large numbers of speculative reports 'connecting' a number of high profile names with the vacancy, they seemed to overlook the obvious pattern: when a management change has been done halfway through a season, John Fry has nearly always appointed from within the club. Even when he has chosen to look outside the club in the middle of a campaign, it's been either to Gary Johnson (for his second spell) or to David Webb (who was a personal friend of Norman Hayward's). In fact in just under 20 years worth as Chairman, the only time Mr Fry has chosen an entire outsider to the club whilst the season is in progress was Colin Addison, all the way back in 2000.

That's why in my last blog Darren was only one of two people I could see in the bookies lists, and pretty much everything I've heard and seen since then is that this is the course that Fry would like to head down, assuming his hand isn't forced by results on the field of play during the time that follows. We saw that last season, where Terry Skiverton was named as the 'acting manager' - the media expected a replacement to Gary Johnson to be appointed, but slowly but surely it became obvious that Skivo was their intended successor - until the wheels began to fall off during away matches at Leyton Orient, Colchester United and Fleetwood Town that forced their hand to change again. So I expect the choice of manager in the board's eyes to be "Darren, until proven otherwise", rather than them being likely to go actively recruiting and interviewing.

There are risks in that sort of approach, and the 2014-15 spell that saw Skivo take charge is an obvious example that doesn't really need spelling out. Inevitably the risk of appointing a rookie manager in a position like this one is that they are going to face very difficult pressurising circumstances during a period when you're still learning the job. The reason why they call it 'being thrown in the deep end' is because in such circumstances, some people learn how to swim very quickly, because they have to, given the circumstances, but others will inevitably flounder because they may not have the guidance they need around them. Darren is the sort of character that could succeed in such circumstances, but then again so is Skivo - there's clearly a bit more to it than passion and determination in those circumstances, and we've yet to see enough games to know whether Darren is likely to have that mystery factor or not.

The other side of the coin is exactly who the club could persuade to come and manage the 91st club in the Football League on a limited playing budget. No manager wants a relegation on his CV, and that's always magnified when it's a club that might fall out of the Football League. Someone might come in and make himself a hero, but I suspect that those who are looking at Yeovil Town right now might view the club's fall over the last 2-3 years and wonder what is going on. Those managers who are good enough to have a choice about where their next career move might be, or who are already in employment may decide to pass up the opportunity, whilst the desperate and the unemployed might not be the sort that we'd want. When I ran through the bookies list, it was scary how few I could envisage coming in at this stage of the season - either from the point of view of them wanting to come to a club in such a position, or from the point of view of whether I'd want them managing our club!

Given John Fry's words that a decision on the first team manager's job must be 'done before the transfer window', I presume this means that Darren will be in charge of the Leyton Orient, Plymouth Argyle and Oxford United games, and that after those matches that the Board would have to make a hard decision - stick or twist again. Those are not easy games, with the latter two currently occupying automatic promotion positions, but for any permanent appointment of Darren to carry credibility then it's probably going to need to aim at around five points (a win and two draws) or six points (two wins and a defeat) to look the part. Much less than that, and the question mark will be whether he can bring about that change to guarantee us 22nd place or higher.

But whatever the Board decide, they must not dither, and should rigidly stick to John's words - the transfer window will be critical to the club, and in my view in recent years we've not used it effectively, with management changes and decisions being made after the window and not before it - the sacking of Gary Johnson in early February was a particularly good example of that. Strong decisions are essential.

The other comments made by John Fry last week concerned his thoughts on Supporter Trusts. It should be stressed that Supporters Trusts are created and run for the benefit of the fans and the community that they serve in, and can be as big or small as fans can make them be. A Trust is managed entirely independently of its associated football club, and is answerable to its membership. It's policies, when established, are determined by that membership and by the appointed committee members.

John's claims were that his current directors have been putting in "an extra half-a-million pounds each year" as part of their membership of the Board, with the implication that a Trust would have to provide the club with finances of that kind of size in order to sit at the table. It would have helped if the Gazette had challenged this figure, or had asked how it was broken down, as such money has never appeared in the club accounts. Furthermore, my understanding is that Norman Hayward is the only person capable of producing such spare cash, and whilst I'm skeptical about the figure itself, given the club accounts, I'm even more skeptical that all board members will have provided a contribution.

It shouldn't be forgotten that the club's fans are already making a massive financial contribution to the financial well-being of the club. Back in October, the Football League published the average price paid by fans in each division, once things like concessions, junior tickets and season tickets were factored in. The League One average figure for last season was 11.72 per person - a figure that's probably generous given that Yeovil were singled out by BBC Sport as the most expensive club in the division for 2014-15. Based on last season's 4,346 average gate, that means fans contributed 1,171,508, and that's just in basic gate money, before cup games, programmes, pies, pints, cups of tea and shirts are factored in. Supporters should be treated as a valuable major stakeholder in the football club, with or without a Supporters Trust and with or without anyone holding a position in the boardroom.

If fans can create a strong well-backed Supporters Trust, then their ability to centralise and coordinate a fans voice can be combined with the ability for the club to work with that Trust in a co-operative manner. In an environment that has seen gates at Huish Park radically drop this season, anything that can enthuse supporters and hold their interests in the club should be encouraged, whether that benefits the club by 500,000 or 500, or purely by a basic sense of belonging which I know some have felt has been lost over the years.

Where I think John has got it wrong is the inference that the Trust, or the mood amongst supporters is directly caused by us not playing Championship level football any more. I never ever expected the club to play at that level, and so saw that season as a bit of a bonus. There is a clear glass ceiling of financial investment we will need to break through in order to get there and stay there again, so I'm realistic in that. However, for a club our size, we should be capable of being a mid-table League One side - Walsall, Colchester United, Oldham Athletic - we're currently well below that level and that's obviously a problem for many fans. But in addition to that league table position, there are many many off-the-field concerns - Mr Fry knows of those as a group of fans met with him and a number of club personnel late last season. That meeting showed a big gap between what fans perceive to be the club's failings and what the Board are willing to admit to.

Finally, it's worth noting that today marks five years since we sadly lost Taff Glover from this world, and of course of this blog that still carries his name. He's still missed - particularly if the Welsh rugby side lose a match, or his beloved Spurs throw away a lead and I have this burning urge to pick up the phone! I suspect though that he would be probably spitting feathers at Yeovil Town's current league position in a far more direct way than I am able to do justice!

Lovely footnote Badger, completely agree I still laugh at Spurs (*even though they're half decent now) and just can't kick that habit of thinking I must contact Jon... I think that's a good thing though!

In my view, we'd be better off appointing a monkey than have Way or Skiverton at the club.

Again a very good piece written about our woeful football club. I do like the comment "It would have helped if the Western Gazette had challenged". Surely it is about time they challenged a lot of things with Mr Fry and Hayward. They are a local paper that seem scared to rock the boat. Either the editor is not good enough to do his job or he is running scared of the afore mentioned two people.

Wouldn't it be good PR to have Mr Hayward tell us of his financial plans for the club going forward....rising up the leagues costs money, playing at the lower levels costs less...hmmm..
I am also surprised he hasn't come up with a long term plan to secure the financial future of the club, given his experience in business.

A good summary. If we do appoint a new manager before 31 December it will be the 5th manager of 2015. Hardly a recipe for success. I have zero confidence in the board's ability to make appropriate decisions. If they stick with Darren it will only be because they have no credible altermative.

I cannot help but see the totally false expectations of both Planning applications as being the source of the problem, involving huge sums of money. And total distraction by the board
Even if Chris Dawson bankrolled the first totally flawed application, it must have added up to at least 50k.
The second has greater content, so to an expert in Planning applications, and fees a similar cost.
I have tried to get the overall total outlay from David Bell, who in truth has been very accommodating, but those levels of costs are nor far from the mark, as I was involved with a similar value scheme in Montacute so dealt with the very same planners. The club was foolishly guided to the first application, the second was doomed to fail for similar major reasons. With all of that over 4 years, the board in my view lost a lot of potential funds from the squad side, and was very misguided to believe development was going to happen. I told the board that there was a planning solution, that would have got a result, but none of the two being pursued for nearly five years now

Initially I was uneasy at Darren's appointment but I believe he has a strong bond with both players and club.
He is tactically and fitness aware and the improvement is starting to show.
Appointing PS with his illness was Frys call.
Darren needs an experienced No2 and his own staff. He needs to be relieved of Skivo who sadly is not fit for purpose.

YTFC is like watching groundhog day, I completely agree with your view(3 scenarios)but I have previously said DW is a shoo in, regardless of the next 3 results, we can analise as much as we like but it is clear to me.We keep on about the dynamic duo TS & DW their commitment to the club etc but it is clear that neither of them is management material at this time if DW was going to be any good why wasn't TS, as best buddies surely it wouldn't matter to them which one was in charge I would assume they both worked together last time when it was clear they had no motivational skills and with their lack of experience(young players like Yeovil rely on need an experienced manager who has been around and has achieved things to look up to, believe in) outside of YTFC have shown that they are both not ready, forget loyalty etc they are like everyone else just trying to hold on to their own jobs, nobody is likely to say they are not up to it themselves, we need a clear out, if Fry really has the interests of the club at heart he would know we need a fresh start manager, coaching team, as for his comment that all of his board members have put in 500000 show us the receipts Fry where has that money gone?exactly which board members have contributed, as they say show us your money and I for one would look at the directors and you differently and I just might believe you have the clubs best interest at heart and not your own.A new manager might not save us from going down (the rot has set in deep) but I do believe that is the only way our clubs fortune will change.

My feeling is that if we want to appoint " a new manager with plenty of experience", who, with the relevant skills and experience is going to want to come to us?. I do feel that someone needs to be in place permanent, whether it be Darren or someone else, by the opening of the transfer window to let the manager get on and recruit players he wants.

As ever a great article. I may have stumbled across a 'John Fry to English' translation for the half a million put into the club by the board which doesn't appear in the books. John has looked at the salaries other chairmen and directors take from clubs (not necessarily League 2 clubs) and as our directors aren't paid they are 'saving' the club the expense of a salaried board, or something like 500k/year. Which you can spin (if you are Peter Mandleson!) into an injection of 'funds' into the club. More like an injection of 'service akin to 500k'

Darren Way is talking a very good job in his media interviews and building himself up as the ideal candidate for the permanent job - he is good at the spin. Yet he has been our 'attack coach' for three years and was responsible for teaching the forward players how to score - the stats show he was not very good at it. Ditto Skivo who has been a poor defence coach as we have shipped so many soft goals. So how come DW thinks he can instantly transform himself from a poor attack coach into a manager who can suddenly get results from the same players? The answer is that he can't. For me he had to win the Barnet game - a draw salvaged in the last 10 minutes is not good enough. The best of luck to him of course and if it all works then brilliant and I will eat my words but for me we need a new manager and new coaching staff.

The board will do anything to avoid bringing in a new man from outside - financially averse.
They may wait until after the York City 6 pointer before committing but they are desperately hoping that DW does enough to get the nod. But, given the difficulty of the upcoming games, what would be considered enough?

Well with all the money his hand picked directors have put in I'm sure he has both the ability and the vision to bring in such quality.
Probably the same as he has had being in charge of stadium development !

I think although Darren needs some media training as he does not come across the best when interviewed ( That will improve)he may as well be given the opportunity.i don't expect there is any money in the coffers solo body in situ works and one thing he will give it 100%. He does need to lighten up slightly as seems very edgy but I expect that is because he wants it so bad and give him ago and use any spare money for. A couple of new signings
