31 August 2015 : Standing Up For Sturrock
On Sunday, manager Paul Sturrock gave his views on the club's start to the 2015-16 season. Since he's arrived at the club, he's adopted an unusually up front way of delivering messages to supporters, notably in his (rather brave!) decision to join this site's Facebook group, and occasionally contribute comment to what is said on there. Fans can often be abrasive and flippant, particularly at 4.51p.m. on a Saturday, but his decision to do so has been welcomed by them, so far. His views on the start to the season should also go down well with the majority, given that it continues that theme of being open with the fans about his thoughts.

I did say in my season preview blog that was written just before the season commenced that I saw the 2015-16 campaign as being a hard one to predict. Before we headed down to St James Park, Exeter I also predicted that we might have some sticky moments to the first half of the season, citing the large squad turnover as a big factor in how that might affect us. I said on August 6th:

"Bringing in fifteen players won't work perfectly on Day One. There will be the odd game, particularly during the first half of the season, where such a team will play like a bunch of strangers and we'll suffer a bad result. The hope though is that given time, and the odd bit of tinkering from Paul Sturrock, that as the season progresses that we'll see an improving team, mainly during the second half of the season"

In broad terms, I'd see no reason to alter that view, although being honest we're probably a notch or two below where I hoped we would be. I can see an obvious reason for that (as can Mr Sturrock!) which I'll come on to later. The current League Two table is a very early one but there is one in which we can already see a possible pattern. Against Oxford United (5th) and Bristol Rovers (7th) there was a gap between ourselves and our opponents that was noticeable, and it may well be that they are two clubs challenging for promotion at the end of the season. Against Exeter City (13th) it was a bit of a game of two halves, where both teams had chances to win. Against York City (19th) it was a bit of an awful spectacle (not helped by us getting drowned on the away terrace) but one in which there wasn't a lot between the two teams - York probably deserved their win but not by a lot. Then against Luton Town (22nd) after a slow start we finished as the better side and won the game.

So albeit against just five games, there is a significant correlation between the early league positions and how we've performed against those clubs. This may tell us that we're not at the same level as the top seven promotion-chasing clubs, but it need not necessarily follow that we can't pick up points against the lesser sides. We will see in due course how well other clubs do against Oxford on their home patch - I hadn't realised that they finished last season very strongly as well - across the two seasons they are unbeaten in thirteen League Two matches.

Oxford boss Michael Appleton's start in his current job was a sticky one though. Having spent the first dozen games of last season in or around the relegation zone, he has been quietly pulling them up the form table. At the end of November they hadn't been above 19th in the table, but eventually pulled themselves into a comfortable 13th place slot. Given Appleton arrived at the Kassam just over a year ago, he perhaps maps out how a club can be built up under a new manager, and even for a club Oxford's size shows that building a new squad takes time. They now look like a side that can be top seven this year - possibly higher than that. But it's taken Appleton the best part of 14 months to get into that sort of position.

Sturrock is currently five games into his 'proper' reign at the club (it's hard to include the few games he took charge of last season, given the monumental slide he inherited). Five games into Appleton's reign, his side had been bottom of the table, and had just picked up their first point of the season, sitting in 23rd place. Probably Oxford United fans were not too happy about that start to their season, but they eventually stabilised, and now in their manager's second season, the early implications are that he's looking at a different end of the table. It may be that it's simplistic to assume that we'd follow the exact same path - Oxford have a bigger playing budget than us - but it's worthy of a comparison.

The other thing to note is that down near the bottom there are two other clubs who I think most fans would be surprised to see down there, with Luton Town and Notts County highly fancied in the pre-season bookies odds. Over the summer, Luton brought in 12 new players and got rid of 16 players. Notts County brought in 19 players and let 13 players go. Of course we've brought in 19 players and got rid of pretty much the same sort of numbers. I've not run through the entire division to see if this holds up but it would not surprise me if Notts County (20th), Yeovil Town (21st) and Luton Town (22nd) stood as three of the clubs with the biggest turnover of players. Sturrock briefly alludes to the turnover of players in his views - it seems reasonable to me to believe that clubs with brand new squads will be more flakey as those players get to know each other. Hopefully that aspect will improve as time moves on.

It's been done to death in interviews, reports and views, but the loss of Ben Tozer (cartilege), Kevin Dawson (groin), Simon Gillett (knee), Ryan Dickson (groin), Marc Laird (torn hamstring) and Wes Fogden (broken fingers) - and others who have since returned - can't be under-estimated. Of those, we expected all except for Gillett to be fit for the start of the season. If you did up your ideal Yeovil Town starting line-up with all players fit, I suspect that most of those six would get into the eleven - fans were drooling over our midfield options during pre-season, but instead we've been filling holes with Alex Lacey and Ryan Bird (with no disrespect to either player - they're not natural midfielders). Injuries can't be used as a total excuse, but equally it's idiocy to pretend that it doesn't have an effect in those circumstances. We have to hope that when those five (Gillett excluded) return towards the end of September that they'll be able to build up their match fitness to make a difference in the side, although even there Tozer and Dawson missed the whole of pre-season training.

The one bit of Paul Sturrock's viewpoint that I'd probably disagree with is that he suggested that he might have gone for a smaller squad but with more experienced (and expensive) players if he'd replayed his summer recruitment plans again. If anything, I think he's being overly harsh on himself - it's worth noting that if we had opted for a smaller squad full of more experienced players, then when those half-dozen injuries hit, then we'd have been struggling badly to put out any sort of substitutes bench. Even with the squad size we've had, we've dropped down to four or five subs at times, and so if we'd opted for a smaller squad but with more experienced players then we would have really struggled at that point. Could any man have predicted that you'd lose four experienced central midfielders at this stage of the season?

That's unfortunately the reality of the situation. I'm a bit skeptical about whether the board are hiding behind the SCMP (salary capping) rules as an internal commercial decision, or whether they genuinely are hitting those limits. But with or without SCMP, any football club board is going to have a ceiling that they want a manager to stick to. Whichever division Yeovil Town has been in, since we have entered the Football League, we have always been the paupers, we don't have the benefactor willing to dip into his pocked that others have, and so other clubs have been able to outbid us.

Sturrock aludes to this without naming names. However, the rumourmill suggested we had been trying to bring in Billy Paynter (now at Hartlepool United) and Paul Heffernan (now at Queen Of The South). Both players have been based in the north of England and Scotland respectively for a while now, so it may be that geography played its part, but assuming those rumours were true, they were examples of the sort of experienced strikers that we missed out on. On the flipside, the family situation regarding Saltash-born Ryan Dickson and Cardiff boy Jack Compton meant that two deals did run our way because both players wanted to be closer to home. But most of the time, money talks, and although League Two should put Yeovil Town onto a more competitive keel, as Mr Sturrock suggests, we are still going to be well in the bottom half of any financial league table. That's why we end up with 19, 20 and 21 year olds on our books, because the Paynters and Heffernans of this world nearly always end up out of our reach.

That's where I think some fans were getting ahead of themselves during pre-season in terms of their expectations - and here is the rather loud reality check. At some stage, once we get an empty week, I'll publish a summary of the pre-season predictions that supporters committed to before the season kicked off, but suffice it to say that I found the numbers within the survey and also on Facebook who were predicting we'd get promoted by the end of the 2015-16 season to be rather jaw-dropping. It was apparent that a large proportion of fans expected promotion this year. Of course we might to - even with the poor start that we've had we're only six points off seventh, which is all you have to do to sneak into the play-offs, but in terms of expectations I had earmarked this season as a rebuilding exercise, based on our high turnover of players, our likely budget limits and the number of years its taken clubs like Southend, Plymouth and Oxford to move upwards - three clubs who are crowd-wise and budget-wise bigger than Yeovil yet did not find League Two the easy breeze in the park some might think it is. Right now, we're finding that one out for ourselves.

And of course we're just five games into the season. Should a manager actually need to explain or justify himself this early into the season? It's good that he has done so, but this is early days, and I think most reasonable fans will understand there are factors in why we've started as we have. He does make a very important point towards the end of his viewpoint that is worth emphasising. During last season, I felt that a number of people, on and off the field, lost their heads a little when the going got tough last season, and contributed to the losing mentality and the friction throughout the club. People should be allowed to let off steam on message boards and in pubs about the games they've watched without being made to feel bad for doing so. But within the walls of the stadium, we have to be patient, particularly with the younger players whose confidence levels may be stretched if results stay flakey.

The number one priority of the first half of this season has to be to shake off that losing mentality, and to become a club that can readily cope with winning, drawing and losing on a relatively even keel - and I do mean all three, as I saw a few ludicrously over-the-top comments after the Luton win as well! And we have to be a club that looks to the present and the future - when Paul Sturrock's views were published, I swear I saw almost as many comments being made about Gary Johnson on my Twitter timeline than I did about the manager who is currently in situ! League Two is where we are now, and Paul Sturrock is our manager, and we need to give him the best chance to succeed. That means dealing with the issues we have today, and not what might have been at any given point in time.

Nothing will change while we persist with the incompetent pair of Skiverton & Way on the training ground.

Sorry to say but I agree with Derek Norman, it's the one common factor and we struggled with skivo as manager. Usually a new back room team comes in with new manager and changes the ethos

Derek - if Messrs Way and Skiverton weren't up to task then I'm sure Sturrock would send them packing. He can't be labelled as having any loyalties to them like GJ would have had. I personally support both Darren and Skiv in their role.

As to the overall points of the blog - it is far too early to be worrying. After 5 more games lets see. However one thing that does annoy me is when people refer to a losing mentality amongst the squad...they say "2 relegations in 2 seasons"..."downwards spiral" etc...only one player has been a part of the two relegations. So the team starts afresh, with most having joined in the summer, they can't have a losing mentality as they've barely moved in.

The key to keeping the fans happy is not to necessarily win every game (although that would work!). Its the key indicators that fans look for: desire, basic ability to defend, and maybe (in some players) the balls to try something - to go forward, to take a shot.

I believe this team will get there. The midlfield needs stabilizing, then the centre of defence does. Once that is done we can start to build.

I don't worry if I get shot down but sturrock is awful in every respect. From his constant ref of the boy which is an insult to players over 30 to his pathetic demeanour on the touch line . Can't stand him at all and hope he goes asap before he takes ytfc to the conference . I know the great Taff loves him and his boring blog is a good sleeping aid

Have to agree that too many people have had ludicrously inflated expectations. PS has been particularly unlucky with the endless injuries to midfielders. A stable midfield would make a lot of difference to the team. Much too early for soulsearching. End of October is normally a good time to take stock.

I don't often write, but I have to disagree with the 'boring blog' comment. I look forward to Taff's blogs and find them interesting.

Give Sturrock a chance, as Taff rightly says this will take time and Sturrock is experienced at this level. He certainly would be my preference over a lot of managers.

Can I ask Bradley what he would do now if he had the power to change things? It sound like get rid of JS asap and S & W, who would he like to see take over?

Personally I can't knock Sturrocks candidness ,hats off to the man who admits he's made some mistakes.I doubt many managers would do so.
My concern is John Frys constant diatribe about the wage cap.
The 3/5 year plan produced what?
If the planning application fails he should step aside and allow a fans trust or another to buy shares.
Otherwise it's "Back to the conference" starring John Fry.
Sturrock deserves a good chance and decent backing

Won 1 lost 4 is not good reading but there is many a time a club will have a blistering start then fade and have similar stats at some stage during the season - even top clubs like Man City last season. I hope we are getting that stage out of the way early! There are two key times to measure performance overall at the start of the season: after 10 games and at the end of October. After 10 games and training just about everyday players should know each other inside out and have gelled. If not, the end of October is the time to consider whether to change playing personnel and/or the management team. Easier said then done because there have to be better people out there you can afford and are available. Any club performing poorly which sticks with players and the management team after that have to start again and do things differently to kick start the season - its the same in any business. We are not at that stage yet and Paul Sturrock still has my confidence as do the players. However, I do share Derek's view to some degree about Skivo and Darren Way, who were great players for us. Skivo as defensive coach and Way as attacking coach are obviously not ironing out the basics fast enough and getting the players to play like they did. They teach and the players learn - simple. Our stronger players will be back soon and if that doesn't do the trick then all change at the end of October.

There are a few things:

The club should forget the off-field plans currently, they are a distraction - staying in the football league is becoming a serious issue and that should be the only priority.

Confidence is the key - successive relegations, regardless of personnel affects teams - the same coaching staff were not questioned when success was being achieved - lack of confidence leads to poor decision-making on the pitch, therefore I agree with the experienced players being required, in conjunction with the younger, more raw talent as an exciting blend.

But as these three elements - experience, raw talent and confidence have not yet been seen together - PS should be given more time

I think he is a little harsh on his self criticism of the squad - when all fit if not performing, yeah maybe, but as he says, the spine is missing, and the spine is key to any team at any level (Yaya Toure through to Sunday morning pub sides)

If PS reads these comments.......every player should come off that pitch with absolutely nothing left to give.....and whilst on that pitch they should look after the ball like it is a cherished object, and if they lose it should die trying to retrieve it.......

Then no-one can complain - if you are beaten....then that is because they are a better team....

Most leagues 80% teams are all exactly the same - effort, commitment, teamwork, confidence and enjoyment will ensure that you are successful, which in turn fosters further success.

I will have another look mid Nov and hope my comments are......Yeah.....now looking good!

This is tragic start to the season, and whilst there might have been excessive early injuries,s that what the game is all about.
I truly fear there is an entirely different agenda operating at board level, somehow the distraction of a totally irresponsible latest Planning application, and the present fall of effectively 60 places in the pyramid since the overreached championship days. I also find it hard to believe that the second hopeless application, like the first, is not costing the club at the expense of the team. I offered my architect service, yet they still front the plans with a non architect person, who in David Bell is very well intentioned, but is not I think an architect. Hotel though?!

Why oh why is our dear football club imploding.
Gary Johnson once famously said, 'Onwards and upwards'
Everything I see the club doing, tells me we are spiralling downwards and outwards.....
There has to be another agenda operating and there needs to desperately be some reassurance from the board. David Bell, as de facto club spokesperson, what on earth is happening, as I fail to see anything logical about the desperate demise of the team or the hopelessly once again flawed application for development. I think I will send this message to David direct, but will see if you publish it first Martin
