11 January 2006 : January Transfer Window Round-Up No.3
The last few days has brought a few more big moves in the January transfer window that have affected many of Yeovil's fellow League One clubs. Of course, one major one has affected the Glovers today - Lee Johnson's transfer to Hearts having already been covered in detail earlier in the day.

Every day in January seems to be bringing more comings and goings at the Bescot Stadium, and it is now looking that Yeovil's second away match of the season against Walsall will see them lining up against radically different opponents to those who played in the FA Cup match in December. Gone is top scorer Matt Fryatt, who has already scored twice against Yeovil this season. He has signed a 3.5 year contract with Championship side Leicester City for an undisclosed fee that has other payment clauses ready to trigger if Fryatt settles in at the Walkers Stadium.

Gone also is midfielder Julian Bennett. The left-back is another moving for an undisclosed fee and Nottingham Forest are the beneficiaries. Bennett said of the deal: "Lots of other teams, including ones in the Championship, were showing interest in me, but this is my home-town club and it's a dream come true."

Fortunately for manager Paul Merson, who must be the busiest boss in England at present, he does have one new man coming in and it looks to be a direct replacment for Bennett. Grant Smith is coming in on loan from Bristol City after failing to start a game under Robins manager Gary Johnson. The 25 year old is becoming a bit of a nomad - Walsall will be the 11th club of his fairly short career. Smith can play either as a left-winger or a left-back, although the loss of Bennett would imply a shoe-in for the latter position.

Another former Walsall man is down on his luck this week. Midfielder Paul Smith is out of work after Gillingham released him, just two months after he agreed to ditch an 18 month contract with the Saddlers to come back to a side he once captained. Now it seems that show of loyalty backfired. Smith said of the news: "I was in no rush to leave Walsall because it is a good club but it was the lure of coming back down south and going back to Gillingham, where I had been for so long and knew everyone, that was behind my decision. I suppose my affection for Gillingham cost me in the end because really I should have said no but I was desperate to get back there. One minute I was playing for them, then the next minute I am not - and the contract offer is taken away. Gillingham have made up their minds they do not want me and there is not a lot I can do. I just need to put this experience behind me and get another club."

Gillingham have also let two other players go - both travelling to Scotland. Striker Steve Hislop has signed a 2.5 year deal with Livingston, whilst goalkeeper Tony Bullock has moved to St Mirren.

Life does exist though outside WS1 in League One. Chelsea defender Steve Watt has moved to Swansea City on a free transfer. The 20 year old has penned an 18 month deal and is no stranger to this level having played for fellow League One side Barnsley on loan last season. The glut of loan deals continues with Gerard Nash's move to Hartlepool United. The 19 year old defender is attempting to re-establish his career after a series of knee injuries. Meanwhile Bradford City midfielder Lee Crooks won't be at Huish Park in 10 days time - he is off for a loan spell with Notts County.

The loan transfer movement concludes for today with Hull City defender Marc Joseph heading to relegation-threatened Blackpool. That is likely to turn into an 18 month permanent deal for the 29 year old who has already experienced League One football this season with Gary Johnson having taken him on a short loan spell with Bristol City.

Finally one more intruiging transfer to ponder as we see how manager's opinions can differ. Swindon Town in 24th place felt that striker Tony Thorpe was not what they wanted and so they paid him off last month, leaving him a free agent. Now Colchester United in 5th place reckon he is worth a deal until the end of the season. A crazy or an inspired move from Colchester boss Phil Parkinson? Having taken Thorpe's Swindon strike partner Jamie Cureton on loan in the autumn and getting seven goals out of a player that hadn't scored for the Wiltshire side all season, it seems likely that Parkinson is hoping that lightning really does strike twice with one-goal Thorpe.
