13 July 2006 : Agent Fees Fall For Glovers And League
Yeovil Town's use of payments to football agents has dropped radically in the past six months, suggesting that the huge payment of £53,000 made during the July-December 2005 reporting period may have been a one-off. The club have never officially confirmed it, but the bulk of that figure has been widely attributed to the Pablo Bastianini transfer.

The latest payment figures of £6,200 made during the January-June 2006 period could easily relate to the severance deal that had to be brokered when Bastianini's contract was paid up. Yeovil Town only made four new signings during this period - Anthony Barry, Daniel Webb, Bradley Thomas and Jamie Vincent - and with three of those players coming from non-league clubs and the fourth being a free agent, it would be a surprise if any agents fees were paid by the club for their services.

During the reporting period the Glovers updated three contracts and cancelled five contracts whilst executing a massive 13 loan transactions. The large number is probably in part due to the loans of players like Marc Wilson, Sam Alsop, Chris Cohen and Craig Rocastle being extended.

Overall the Football League are claiming a £157,825 drop in payments to agents by football clubs across the 2005-06 season in comparison with the previous 12 months. This sounds like a lot but when it is put against the total payments by Football League clubs of £7,660,028 it's actually a 2 percent drop, which is not really significant enough to be called a trend.

At League One level, in fact, the payment of agent fees has mushroomed, going up by 60 percent over the past 12 months. Blackpool, Colchester United, Gillingham, Hartlepool United, Huddersfield Town, Port Vale, Scunthorpe United and Walsall were the good boys having not paid a penny to football agents during the previous 12 months.

The bulk of the increase in League One spending can be attributed to just four clubs, with Nottingham Forest (£237,950), Swansea City (£123,334), Bristol City (£116,925) and Doncaster Rovers (£102,400) according for 61 percent of League One's spending. In total, £955,059 has been paid out over the last 12 months by League One clubs, with £406,299 coming in the last six months.

Football League Chairman Lord Mawhinney seemed happy with the overall figures though and has said: "It is encouraging that clubs spent £150,000 less on payments to agents than was the case last year. I hope the regular, half-yearly publication of these fees has helped. Publication certainly has been a catalyst for a wider debate about the role of agents in football. In turn, this has paved the way for The League to introduce new regulations governing how agents' operate."

He claimed that changes within the Football League rules had led to the decrease in figures adding: "I applaud clubs for their willingness to enter into this debate and for making changes that will deliver greater levels of transparency and integrity to transfer negotiations. Two of these changes, in particular, are likely to lead to a reduction in what clubs pay to agents. First, there will be no 'dual representation' - an agent will have to represent either the club or the player. Secondly, agents will no longer be able to pass on to clubs the costs of representing a player."
