21 December 2007 : Football League Review : December 21st 2007
Having enjoyed a final week of precious rest, League One teams now prepare to kick off the notoriously action-packed Christmas fortnight. And with three December fixtures already played, clubs around the country will be looking to make a strong start to the second half of the season.

Last week, Lee Sinnott’s humbled Valiants continued their recent revival in the league with a goalless draw at Vale Park against Tranmere Rovers, only party making amends for their dismal FA Cup performance in mid-week, which saw them crash out of the competition, at the hands of non-league minnows Chasetown.

Fellow strugglers Bournemouth and Cheltenham both put an end to their losing streaks, securing timely wins against lowly Gillingham and rock-bottom Luton respectively, with Millwall and the Gas also losing on the day. Both games finished with clean sheets for the home sides, and single winning goals, from Brett Pitman and Andy Lindegaard - clearly hoping to catch Russell Slade’s eye ahead of the January transfer window ...

Two first half goals weren’t enough for the Lions at the New Den, where Lee Hughes’ hat-trick handed Oldham all three points. Meanwhile neo-Terrier Phil Jevons answered David Pipe’s second half comeback for Bristol Rovers with a nifty strike of his own, guaranteeing all three points for Huddersfield. Swindon Town’s troubles worsened at the County Ground, where they were steamrolled by Brighton and Hove Albion, three nil. Also winning 3-0, Swansea City captured the headlines yet again, comfortably brushing aside a hesitant Southend United eleven.

Elsewhere John Ward’s Cumbrians and Martin Ling’s O’s squared up at Brunton Park, in another top-of-the-table clash, which saw the Blues come out on top. And Hartlepool United avenged last week’s defeat at Huish Park with three goals of their own at home against Crewe Alexandra.

Leeds United showcased their fighting spirit against a brave Walsall side, who led one nil until the very last minute, when old boy Alan Thompson popped up to answer fellow-veteran Tommy Mooney with a stoppage time free-kick, that took a lucky deflection and nicked another late point for the Whites.

Having held high-flyers Carlisle United to an entertaining 2-2 draw two weeks ago, courtesy of Bradley Johnson’s injury time equaliser, Northampton Town recorded the same score last Saturday against promotion chasers Nottingham Forest - only this time it was Junior Agogo who stole the show at the death with a headed equaliser for the Reds.

For Yeovil it was smiles all around – Sunday’s clash with Doncaster becoming the Glovers’ third back to back win. Despite another nervy finish, Slade’s men broke down the home side brilliantly - Darren leading the Way, with his first goal of the campaign. Marcus Stewart subsequently wrapped up the win for his team, before seeing red for a harmless tackle on 90 minutes. In the end Town conceded another late goal, but fortunately captain Skiverton’s clumsy footwork wasn’t enough to affect the outcome of the game!

The green and whites now turn to Brisbane Road and Leyton Orient - their second consecutive away tie - with Slade currently looking to be a strong candidate for the manager of the month award. On Saturday the players will therefore be hoping to keep their gaffer in contention, with an early Christmas present in the form of an incredible fourth win on the trot.
