14 August 2012 : Starting The Season Right
The 2012-13 season is finally amongst us. Well ... sort of. Tonight, Yeovil Town will play their first competitive fixture - in fact not a League One match, but a League Cup match. This unusual start has been made all the more nonsensical by fourteen League Cup First Round matches having been played over the weekend, and a further three more being played tonight. By the time the Glovers kick-off their season against Colchester United, a total of seventeen clubs will already know that one of their routes to glory has already been extinguished.

Whilst I realise that most of this has been caused by the London 2012 Olympics, and the wish for the Football League to avoid an overlap with the events, the opening of the season with a cup competition, and the allowance in the end for clubs to bring forward their fixtures in advance of the Olympics Closing Ceremony has meant for a bit of a bodged approach for the League.

Normally the first day of the season is a big BIG moment in the footballing calendar. So when did it start? Last Saturday when many clubs kicked off proceedings by bringing their League Cup games forward by a few days so they could get them in on a weekend? On Tuesday night when Yeovil Town kick into action? Or does it only really begin on this coming Saturday, thus diminishing the League Cup competition down to 'a bit of a kickabout' before the 'real thing' turns up? Hopefully these arrangements will be a one-off for the Olympics and there won't be a temptation to provide this staggered approach on a regular basis.

Whatever, we start tonight in terms of competitive matches, which is what matters, and we will get our first proper chance to see how our squad competes against a League One side, and in Colchester United a club that will represent the sort of club we will want to finish above at the end of the season. Hence a useful indication of the standard we are at. Not that this will be the be-all and end-all - we'll probably need ten games or so to spot a certain pattern, but with the majority of pre-season friendlies being against clubs below us in the pyramid structure, this will be a tough one to call.

There are a lot of differences between this season and the last couple of pre-seasons that have been on the positive side. The last couple of summers have seen us pile our way through 101 different trialists, and to be still signing up players in the week before the season started. The sense was that some players were drafted in, more because time was running out rather than because they were definitively good enough. This season, most of the trialists were behind closed doors and many were let go before we even got to the first friendly. Apart from James Clarke, which was due to him picking up an injury, most of the decisions were made by around the second or third friendly.

With the exception of one the loanees, Gozie Ugwu, who turned up two days after the second friendly, all of the squad members that we will start the season with, have been with the club since the opening pre-season friendly against Hereford United. Seventeen out of eighteen players, together for all of the friendly matches. Contemplate that one and compare it to last season! Of course that alone doesn't guarantee success - these players need to be good as well, but it does give us the best chance of building up togetherness, team spirit and a knowledge of each others play. As I see it, that's why we've started seasons so poorly in the last couple of years - we've had players who have been still getting to know each other on the first day of the season proper.

Having more permanent squad players will also help. During Gary's first spell at the club, I know his views on the loan system were somewhat dismissive. He has even talked in his current spell of the need to 'Yeovilify' players - to get them into your work ethic, and tactical routines. You can't do that on one month loan deals. That's why the two loans we do have are there on half season deals, and were brought in early on. It also means that the majority of our players will not be living out of suitcases in hotel rooms, but will be setting up more fixed homes.

The main downer I can see with the current squad is its size. On any given matchday, we can select eleven players and seven substitutes. That means that we need all eighteen players available just to fill our bench. If we take the current situation where Gavin Williams and Rohan Ince are injured, that means we'd need to co-opt Youth Team players to fill the bench from Day One. Gary does hint that he has got room for additional loans if the situation arises, but making judgement calls on that is somewhat harder, and in any case we're back to the 'Yeovilify' issue again.

Considering all of that, I can see Yeovil Town being a stronger team than last season with all players available, and hopefully that will give us a platform into the new season that can clock up points whilst most players are fit and available. Where I have doubts is where things will lead if we end up with injuries, or the suspension problems we had last season - I suspect there things might be a lot stickier. For that reason, I think we'll do better than we did last season, but that we'll probably be a little inconsistent at times. Top half of the table might be asking too much, I'd like to think that we could do a whole season without worrying which teams are in the bottom four. That would be a nice thing to achieve based on the past few seasons. But the start will be crucial - we need to pick up points before any squad size issues kick in.

Nailing my predictions down, I think that we'll finish somewhere around 14th. I'll opt for Bury, Walsall, Hartlepool United and Stevenage as my bottom four. At the other end, apart from the obvious shout out for Sheffield United, I can see this as being one of the most wide open promotion races League One has ever seen. I don't think Portsmouth will be in a fit state for the 2012-13 season to seriously compete, so I think we'll be seeing them for at least a couple of seasons. Given that, I can see a real bun fight developing between Coventry City, Doncaster Rovers, Preston North End, MK Dons for the second promotion slot, and with a similarly decent number of clubs able to aim at the play-off slots. Would I rule us out entirely from that hunt? Not entirely, but for that to happen, we're probably going to need a season where injuries are minimal or non-existent.

I thoroughly expect others to have different views on this. For that reason, there's the annual predictions survey. And of course you can stick down your own views at the foot of this article. Just don't discount the idea that we might go back and re-read them when we get to May 2013!
