1 July 2012 : And So It Begins Again ...
Having taken a detailed look at the shape of the Yeovil Town squad at the start of June, it's worth just a quick recap on where we stand again at the start of July. The First Team squad return to training on Monday morning, with so far five new signings within the ranks. These are listed in the Player Profiles section on the site, but are also represented below in order of formation:

Goalkeepers: Gareth Stewart

Defenders: Luke Ayling, Bondz N'Gala, Richard Hinds, Curtis Haynes-Brown, Jamie McAllister

Central Midfielders: Dominic Blizzard, Ed Upson

Attacking Midfielders: Keanu Marsh-Brown, Sam Foley, Gavin Williams, Anthony Edgar

Strikers: Reuben Reid, James Hayter

A month ago, I suggested we needed to fill the squad with "a goalkeeper, a left-back (and ideally another full-back), a left-winger, another central midfielder, and at least two strikers". Having now recruited the highly experienced pair of Jamie McAllister and James Hayter, we can now narrow that down even further, as we have our left-back and another striker. So that leaves a goalkeeper, a full-back, a central midfielder and a striker. You could probably make that midfielder a right-sided centre-back if we assume that Luke Ayling is an option to provide the midfield cover.

There's been a bit of talk over how many new players that we don't know about (of a contracted nature) will show up for tomorrow's training. The way Gary has talked about it in recent interviews it would appear that he is after at least four more signings, but that as of last Thursday, he was expecting one or two to be immediately known on Monday. Of course a weekend's worth of phone calls, and players booking into hotels can change that position very quickly, so don't expect that to be a hard figure.

Gary has also suggested that a couple of them are less likely to be household names, implying that they will be recently released players from Premier League and Championship Reserve and Youth sides - i.e. the sort that Luke Ayling and Ed Upson were two years ago when few people had heard of them. You'd expect those players to be the sort that could provide back-up roles for those positions that are already filled - so maybe a 3rd/4th choice striker, or a 3rd choice central midfielder.

We also know that the return of goalkeeper Sam Walker is a strong possibility, whilst James Clarke should be arriving on trial from Oxford City. In theory Michael Woods should be returning on trial, although whilst most of the Yeovil players have been tweeting about moving house and arriving in Yeovil over this weekend, Woodsy appears to still be in London, making us wonder if he has other plans lined up. We'll find out on Monday, no doubt.

Gary has also suggested there will be fewer trialists and fewer loan players used during this summer, with the core of his squad made up of the players he has already signed, hopefully bringing an end to the chaos that the first pre-season friendly has often become where we've ended up paying for the privilege of seeing 20 players turn out, often without teams being announced, of which most we'd never see play for us again. With a two week gap until the first friendly, even that aspect has a chance to settle down, in what will be an unusually extended pre-season period, due to the London Olympics.
