02/03/2012 : Yeovil Town Official Statements : Huish Park Development Statement
2 March 2012 : Huish Park Development Statement
It was announced this week that Brympton Parish Council and Yeovil Town Council had recommended refusal of the Club's planning application for a Food Store at the North End of Huish Park. Fortunately, these are just recommendations and the decision to grant outline planning permission is the responsibility of South Somerset District Council and we remain hopeful of a positive outcome.

However, we cannot disguise our disappointment at the lack of support from the Parish and Town Councils and we cannot help but conclude that they do not understand the implications of their recommendations.

Yeovil is the second smallest town to be represented on the national stage in the Football League and next season will be our tenth consecutive year in that competition. This is a massive achievement on the resources we have had available over that period and the Club has remained financially secure in the process. Yeovil Town FC is highly respected within the Football League and has been granted a Family Excellence award for four years in a row.

Through our Community Sports Trust we have worked extensively with local schools with coaching and educational projects and we have run a number of social inclusion programmes for the benefit of a considerable number of young people. If we are unable to proceed with our development plans our ability to continue with these activities and maintain our standards could be significantly impaired.

In the 22 years since Huish Park was originally built, very little has been done to improve the ground. Resources simply haven't been available and we cannot generate enough funding from our trading activities to undertake the development and refurbishment of the ground as well as finance the team in League 1. If we are to continue to make progress and successfully develop the Club and its community activities we have to improve facilities and generate additional income streams.

The only means to achieve that is to raise the capital by developing the area around the stadium. The astroturf at Huish Park is beyond its useful life, the training pitches are not fit for purpose, the car parks are unmade and inadequate and the stadium itself is woefully short of amenities and is beginning to decay. Unlike many other Clubs that have found themselves in a similar position, we are not asking the Councils for any cash. We are requesting their co-operation to unlock the potential value in the site in order to facilitate the improvements that are essential if we are to continue as a Club that can compete in the Football League.

If this assistance is not forthcoming it will become increasingly difficult for the Club to continue at the current level. We have a wonderful opportunity to improve the Huish Park site for the benefit of thousands of local people and it surely cannot make any sense for our local politicians to vote against our proposals which will inevitably lead to a continued deterioration of the area.

We remain undeterred by the messages sent out by Brympton Parish Council and Yeovil Town Council. We are committed to working with South Somerset District Council on a constructive basis and finding a way to implement our development plans for the benefit of all our supporters, stakeholders and the wider community but we need your help.

Please write to your local SSDC council representative in support of our plans. Their contact details can be found on their website at http://www.southsomerset.gov.uk/councillors-and-democracy/councillors/councillor-filter-page/
