7 December 2007 : Football League Review : December 7th 2007
With the warm-up to the busy Christmas period now underway, League One sides around the country played their first fixtures of December on Tuesday night. Indeed the roller-coaster of a season continued for Yeovil Town, who bounced back from their disappointing defeat at the New Den, to see off the struggling Cherries.

All in all thirty goals were scored, with several front-runners staking a serious claim at home.
Indeed promotion favourites Swansea, Carlisle and Leeds all orchestrated 3-0 home wins, against Northampton, Swindon and Port Vale respectively. Following their recent FA Cup humiliation against minnows Chasetown, the Valiants simply couldn’t avoid slumping to their 12th league defeat at Elland Road.

And on Wednesday Southend United got back to winning ways, comfortably beating Huddersfield, 4-1. But November’s manager of the month Colin Calderwood certainly started December on the back-foot – Forest falling short against Walsall and loanee Michael Ricketts.

Meanwhile, Millwall’s recovery continued as they edged past an under-par Orient side in League One’s London derby. Despite not being paid for six weeks, an honourable Luton eleven did well to hold onto a 1-1 draw at Boundary park.

Elsewhere Mark Stimson’s Gillingham made it two straight wins, coming from behind against Crewe, with Chris Dickson once again scoring a brace. And Doncaster played out an uneventful 0-0 draw at the Keepmoat against Brighton. Finally Hartlepool United showcased their ambitions at home to a strong Tranmere side - Yeovil’s next opponents hitting the target no less than three times.

The Glovers though will be on a high after their own mid-week boost. Despite an edgy last quarter and a nerve-wracking five minutes of stoppage time, Slade’s army showed heaps of character to hang onto their lead after the sending off.

The men from Somerset may still not be firing on all cylinders, but they are definitely beginning to look more of a threat in front of goal, what with the addition of the excellent Walker, and the return of veteran Marcus Stewart, whose vision and experience was once again invaluable on Tuesday.

The dilemma for Russell Slade is therefore more likely to be a defensive one this week, with Nathan Jones ruled out for the handball he committed against Bournemouth, conceding what was frankly a stonewall penalty.

Securing back-to-back wins is now crucial if the green and whites realistically want to be promotion contenders come the second half of the season. And although it will no doubt be a hard task to contain the Pools’ prolific strike-force, arguably Yeovil now look more capable than ever of hitting some good home form.

With their second consecutive tie at Huish Park on Saturday, the home fans will be hoping to send their Glovers victorious into what will undoubtedly be a make or break few weeks.
