18 April 2012 : Decisions, Decisions
Although this seems to be an ever-moving target, Yeovil Town first team manager Gary Johnson, Chief Executive Martyn Starnes and the club's board of directors should all be sitting down and sorting out the future of their playing squad about now. Whether Saturday's 0-6 home thrashing by Stevenage has rung any alarm bells or changed any schedules or opinions is hard to tell - the silence from Huish Park has been fairly deafening since the final whistle blew, with the exception of a rather distraught Paul Huntington braving the BBC local radio airwaves.

So if you were Gary, sitting down right now and making those decisions, what would you do? Overall there are two huge issues with the squads we have had over the past few years. Firstly there is a huge over-reliance upon loan players. Despite various claims that we would aim to cut down on the number of loan players we use, we've got through another 18 players borrowed from other clubs, to varying impact. Given that from the start of the 2014-15 season, all emergency and youth loans will be banned, with only standard (long term) loans allowable. It will take time to wean ourselves off this strategy, so starting now would be a good thing.

Secondly, there is the overall issue of short-termism that needs to be conquered. Whilst I appreciate you don't dish out five year contracts to every player that signs for the club, because of the consequences that can present, it is a statement of where we are today that we have 16 players out of contract, and six loanees to add to that.

You can't build for stability or success when there's the risk that every summer your entire squad may get up and walk out the door. We don't want to end up with a bunch of duffers on expensive contracts, but on the other hand you don't want your crown jewels to be leaving on freebies. There has to be a balance here. We've had 43 players registered as first team players this season, with 39 of them getting on the pitch - how can there be any fluency to a team when that is the case?

Whilst these are goals that may be only possible in the long term, we're stuck with the here-and-now. There may be players who have already made up their minds to move away from Huish Park. We can't grumble if they choose to leave - they are all out of contract and it's their choice - even if it will be frustrating if we do lose some. But let's at least work on the idea that's not a foregone conclusion. This is where I would like to see things taken:

1) The Crown Jewels: Whilst some player decisions may be contentious, I would hope that no-one would disagree that we want to keep Paul Huntington, Ed Upson, Luke Ayling and Andy Williams. But let's not just offer our usual token one year deals - a bit of bravery is needed to give them at minimum two year contracts. It's worth noting that with all six of the players we lost last summer, all of them joined rival clubs offering longer term deals. It's job security; it's a chance to bring your family down to Somerset and buy a house here. Any one year deal doesn't give you that, and so for the players that will doubtless be receiving a number of offers to choose from, we're at a big disadvantage if we continue to give out deals shorter than those of our rivals.

2) Other Worthy Winners: There are a number of other players, within the permanent ranks that I would like to see potentially given offers, depending on the balance of wages vs playing budget vs player demands. Gavin Williams tops that list - because of his injury record I wouldn't give him the two year deal that others might justify, but he is worth another go. Equally Dominic Blizzard and Richard Hinds look worthy of another deal, without necessarily being the players you'd push the boat out for. Assuming he is gradually proving his fitness, Michael Woods is the other I'd consider, although perhaps Gary needs to just get the view of his physio to see whether it should be a six month or a twelve month deal.

3) ... Wave Goodbye: A cruel job but somebody has got to do it. It seems fairly obvious that Steve MacLean and Billy Gibson are going to be shown the door, given Gary's comments on the pair. Gibson appears to be a player that needs to get himself regular football somewhere, given the reports coming back from Braintree Town on his progress. I'd also show the door to Kieran Agard, who hasn't really shown enough to suggest he's a League One player at this stage. The signing of Kelly Youga has clearly been a mistake - he'd been out of the game for a couple of years, and it's fairly clear that 45 minutes at Bury is all we're going to see of him. Oh and Alistair Slowe - why on earth the club persist in giving 'jobs' to these 'James Brown' style non-footballers that never play for us, I really don't know, but let's hope Gary brings some sense to the proceedings and eliminates this near annual event. We're a professional football club, not an club where 'membership subscriptions' can be purchased.

4) Ones For The Future: A hard one to judge, given that I'll happily confess that I have not seen Rhys Baggridge, Rob Clowes or Lewis Clarke play since they were in the Under-18s. However, purely by newspaper reports, and second hand feedback, it would appear that Rhys is the one-most-likely-to. Of the Youth Team, when I saw them play in the FA Youth Cup against Charlton Athletic, the two that stood out on the night for me were defender Mitch Brundle and attacker Lloyd Matthews. Given that pair were co-opted into a Reserve Team game yesterday is Gary thinking the same way? Haven't got a clue, but it kinda fits.

5) The Borrowers: As I've said, I'd rather we reduced our reliance upon loan players for next season, because I think this is part of the problem of why our form is so erratic. I wouldn't completely rule out a loan or two, because otherwise you're taking the likes of Steven Caulker and Stephen Henderson off your radar, but I think we have to move towards full or half season loans.

I wouldn't say no to us grabbing Jonathan Grounds and Jonathan Franks if Middlesbrough release them, although I have a funny feeling that a few North-East clubs may get in there before us. As for the others, I think Jonathan Obika probably needs a fresh challenge; he's been a good player for us over the years (sounds funny to say that for a loan player) but it's been on diminishing returns. Goalkeeper Sam Walker is a little too inclined to make errors for my liking, so I'd prefer to look elsewhere next season - we can surely get a decent permanent keeper for once? Of Lawson D'Ath and Josh Morris, I've not really seen enough of them yet to make up my mind where their best positions are, and if they're going to be worthy of an extended loan next season.

6) The Leftovers: It seems utterly comical that of the players we already have contracts for next season, one has barely played since September, whilst another can't even get on our substitutes bench when we're a man short! Even though we've got him on a two year deal, I assume we'll aim to off-load Anthony Edgar - neither Skivo nor Gary have shown any willingness to have him in the first team squad. Like Edgar, Curtis Haynes-Brown is another player who started brightly early on in the season but disappeared out of contention by October.

Without a formal Reserve Team in place, I wonder if these players struggle to maintain their enthusiasm and willpower when they're in an oversized squad where they know on a Monday morning that they have zero chance of getting into the team by Saturday afternoon. There's only so long you can keep motivation levels up, and I think if we are to develop such players in the future, we either need to re-establish a Reserve side, or be a bit more proactive in the way we get these players time out on loan.

The third player on a two year deal is Bondz N'Gala. Whilst I have some reservations about his error rate, he seems close enough to the first team that we'll happily take him through his second year, although it seems that Gary prefers the Huntington/Hinds combination.

7) The Management: Obviously Gareth Stewart and Nathan Jones can in theory register themselves as players for next season, although I hope this is very much as a last resort, rather than as key members of the squad. There's also a bit of an elephant in the room in terms of the wider management team in that we have five people whose job roles include coaching. As one supporter said recently, when you have more coaches on your substitutes bench than substitutes, there's an issue there. We have a small playing squad, and it needs to be used efficiently. There are advantages to having several backroom coaches on the training ground, particularly if you are trying to develop young players though, so this isn't a case of needing a drastic culling.

Overall, maybe the fact that almost everyone is out of contract may be to Gary's benefit in the long run. It's not easy when a manager comes in mid-season, because he has to work with the players that someone else has chosen. At times you've sensed that Gary has come to conclusions about certain players, but has not wanted to burn his bridges with them, because if he did so, he'd potentially shoot himself in the foot. With a clean slate and being able to choose who he wants to (hopefully) keep, that could turn out to be better for him than going into next season with players that he may not want.

Have to say I pretty much agree, especially that we need to get a permenant keeper!

"We're at a big disadvantage if we continue to give out deals shorter than those of our rivals". This is the crux of our problem. People will take a punt on a 6 or 12-month deal when trying to (re)launch their careers, not once they've re-established themselves.

Once again I can't see us offering competitive deals and so history will no doubt repeat itself. The Board didn't do it for Slade or Skivo and so, especially with gates continuing to fall, I can't why/how they would now do it for Johnson.

We need a big centre forward Obika has not done it this season
Goalkeepers I think Walker is not rekliable enough one good game and then three bad gasmes which cost us points. Maybe we have been spoilt with Henderson,Sullivan ,McCarthy and others. Bring back Chreis Wheale

Good summary as ever but I don't necessarily see Upson and Ayling as crown jewels. Woods is if he stays fit and gets matches in. If we compare the side to the one Gary left us with when he went to Bristol, we do not have a strong enough spine to the side or enough flair, so we can play across 90 minutes not in bursts. That is the team ay will be aiming to reproduce.

I concur with your assesment of Walker as a goal keeper for next year, he's woefully week in the important area as He seems reluctant to come for balls that comes into the 6 yrd area, tends to punch rather than catch, when gathering the ball tends to hold it to far from his body thus always giving a opposing player the chance to give him a nudge and loose the ball as has happened on several ocassions

If the club are going to entrench into old ways on contract details and specifics of contact offers etc, without giving any leeway to GJ's advice and suggestions, I can't see GJ staying. It might pan out that they do listen and change a few things here and there to help him assemble a competitive squad that will help ST sales and realistic hope to compete stronger in League One, but the silence from the club does indeed cause doubt that they can shake off old habits.
