10 April 2012 : Mind The Gap
Yesterday's match against Notts County at Meadow Lane was perhaps a chance for Yeovil Town to show how well they could play against a promotion-chasing side, now that the spectre of relegation has more or less been banished. No great pressure; just a chance for the team to express themselves against one of the division's form sides now the magical fifty point barrier has been reached.

Even though we lost yesterday, defeats for Wycombe Wanderers, Walsall and Leyton Orient leave us with an eight point gap with only four games to go, and multiple clubs in between us mean that even the paranoid pessimists would surely say that we are safe. If we win our next match, and one or two of those sides fail to win, then even the mathematicians amongst you will agree.

As for the game itself, you can look at it from two perspectives. Perspective No.1 : A crap referee, who was at times inclined to do what the crowd told him to do, and was guilty of gifting Notts County a dodgy goal at a time that we could have been heading home with a decent away point. Or Perspective No.2 : A defeat against a decent side who across the whole 90 minutes showed probably more flair and attacking threat than we were able to.

Given our concerns now are largely with us looking forward to what we need to do for the 2012-13 season, it's probably more constructive to take the latter perspective. Yes, referee Andrew Madley was weak, and put in a poor performance throughout the game, but as these remaining matches are largely post-season friendlies of sorts, I'd rather look at that.

In general, the two sides league positions looked just about right on Monday. In the first half, I thought Notts County were very good at spreading the ball around and getting it onto the wings. They knew it was a blustery day, and they knew they needed to whip crosses into the box, and our markers were tending to only pick up their wing play after the event. That was in the main the difference between the two sides - their attacks were very structured and incisive, whereas ours generally relied upon us getting into races behind their back four.

Both Michael Woods and Lawson D'Ath are not really classic wingers - more midfielders with attacking intent - Woods had a good first half, but unsurprisingly faded after the break. With Ed Upson almost certainly suspended for three matches after picking up his 15th booking of the season, I'd like to see Woods given a chance to cover for him in the centre, even if it means him having to come off 60 or 70 minutes into each game.

We were probably lucky to only be 1-0 down at the break, but in the second period, it was a far more even affair. However, bar one bit of magic from Andy Williams when he clipped the top of the crossbar, we struggled to create good chances. Fortunately so did Notts County. The longer we stayed in the game, the bigger the chance we might nick something. That happened with a great bit of chasing down from Andy Williams, and an instinctive bit of finishing from Jonathan Franks after a defender fluffed his clearance.

Both the Middlesbrough lads have looked very solid performers throughout their loan spells, and I'd have no complaints if Jonathan Grounds and Jonathan Franks were on permanent contracts next season. Of course there will be the problem of clubs like Hartlepool United sniffing around that may mean we don't get that opportunity, but that's a wider problem with all of the players in the squad.

In the final three minutes then came the Lloyd Sam show - his second of the game dodgy on two counts - once because of a foul on Jonathan Grounds, and then again for his challenge on keeper Sam Walker. At least Sam's third goal was legitimate, otherwise we might have been grumbling even more at the final scoreline than we were. The 3-1 scoreline was a little harsh on the more even second half play.

There's been a bit of talk about Yeovil Town being in 'play-off form' lately - statistically true for that run we had across February and the first half of March, although we've tailed off lately. Much of that seems to be down to the pattern of the fixture lists. We're good enough to beat the likes of Walsall, Rochdale, Colchester, Tranmere and Brentford at home, but maybe not quite good enough to do it on the road against Charlton Athletic, Sheffield Wednesday and Notts County.

There's obviously no disgrace in that, but it perhaps shows where we lie in the pecking order. It's also true to say that the longer we've gone through the mammoth two-games-a-week spell of football, the more our squad has started to look a little stretched, and a few players have started to hobble around a bit.

When you compare the two squads on the back of the Notts County matchday programme, the Magpies had 37 squad players named, stretching out down the whole page, whilst ours got about halfway down the page. Aside from the decision of which loan player to leave out of the matchday squad, Gary Johnson is selecting the only sixteen senior players available to him.

On Friday, County left out their club captain and their top scorer, allowing both to return fresh for the Monday game - we don't have that luxury. We might have a 'team' that is good enough to compete over a short term stretch, but we probably don't yet have a 'squad' that is good enough to sustain that over a 46 game period. Even if we managed to keep the players we want amongst the sixteen first team players who are out of contract, we need to add to those players.

The other thing we lack, as Gary Johnson said after the match, is experience. Magpies striker Lee Hughes seemed to spend half the match clutching a fist full of a defender's shirt, yet somehow managed to avoid being penalised for it - even if Mr Madley didn't fall for his comical swallow dive midway through the second period that probably should have seen him pick up a second yellow card. Jonathan Grounds was neatly taken out in the build-up to County's second goal without the officials spotting it. I'm rather reluctant to see us go down that sort of path, it is infuriating when you can see it happening without it getting picked up.

So there is a bit of a gap there if we are to challenge at the opposite end of the League One table for next season. It's not a glaring one, but a little bit of flair, a little bit of experience, and a little bit lacking from the squad size can have its effect over the course of a 46 game season. Then when you add in the point that we were in this same position this time last season, only to lose six of the seven players we made contract offers to, we probably shouldn't get ahead of ourselves just yet. We should just enjoy the other gap that exists - the eight point margin that seems certain to give us our eighth season in League One.

Good summary. I think Woods is a super player and he will get better and better now his injuries are behind him. I hope we keep him for at least 3 years. County played good football and we were up against it for most of the first half but defended well. Upson should have been sent off! The first goal was hard lines but we all stopped and Sam did not. Second half we had several decent (Gary's favourite word right now!)openings but we fluffed our lines in the final third - poor options and poor execution it seemed to me. Williams chased down the ball for our goal but was poor with other chances to create a scoring opportunity - I think he is tired to be honest. To lose was a shame and a draw would have been execellent for us but I could not see us winning. Still a lot better than our last visit to County!

I was also disappointed with the ref, very weak performance and wasn't helped by his assistants.
Thought our passing was generally poor and gave the ball away too easily from defensive clearances and didn't test the goalie with any shots. Andy Williams looked totally exhausted from his continual chasing long balls and exasperated from lack of decent service - come back soon Gav. Overall we were more about containment than attack and we lost 3-1, which on the face of it seems we failed, but that doesn't tell the true story - without the dodgy decisions it would have been 1-1 and job well done.
