14 November 2011 : Hereford 0 Yeovil 3: Banana Skin Avoided But Another Awaits
Last Saturday's trip to Hereford United probably held a little bit of dread for Glovers fans returning to Edgar Street. Without a win in ten games, and having gone out to lower league opposition in recent years against Torquay United, Rushden and Diamonds and Oxford United, the last thing you need to try to break that run is another banana skin in your way. Hereford's recent run of form compared with us screamed out 'cup shock' but thankfully that never happened.

Edgar Street these days looks a sorrowful dump. I missed the League Cup and Football League Trophy midweekers a couple of years ago due to them being midweekers, and for reasons I can't remember never got there during their single season at League One level, and so have not had 'the pleasure' since we were in the Conference. I haven't missed much. The Blackfriars Terrace is closed and condemned, with disused temporary seating just in front of it now, to keep the Bulls ground within Football League ground regulations, whilst the home terrace at the opposite end looks like it would only need the slightest breeze to take its roof off again. The Cargill double-decker stand, which we were in looks OK, but only in a tired 1960s concrete sort of way. It may be that we've got used to being spoiled by posh new League One facilities, or those of the ex-Premier League clubs, but it was a bit of a culture shock to stand on the terrace.

The pitch wasn't much better. Looking very soft and spongy, even before kick-off you could see the imprint of a football boot left in the turf prior to kick-off, and this probably influenced the tone of the match - a scrappy ball-up-in-the-air sort of match at times, with much of the play concentrated amongst the central players in the central third of the pitch. This wasn't a game for 'patterns of play' and Yeovil's tendency to pump the ball up the channels for Kieran Agard to chase looked more like a rugby side trying to claim territory for line-outs than an attempt to play the beautiful game.

The beauty was instead shown by the goals. Normally when we try shooting from distance, it's almost a sign of desperation that we couldn't get within 25 yards of our opponent's goal. This time it seemed to pay off - Ed Upson getting two quick attempts, one blocked and one right in the corner of the net. This seemed to cause the Bulls some problems, because for the remainder of the half, any early action they might have seen fizzled out entirely following that goal.

A double substitution made by the Bulls at half time, including the introduction of Delroy Facey, who has played for a zillion clubs in the bottom two divisions, fired things up a touch, with Hereford now being the ones to go a little longer, banging in balls at their target. Thankfully Paul Huntington and Bondz N'Gala enjoyed that approach, and Paul Wotton was enjoying a little more space to mop up and pass the ball out than he usually does at League One level. Gareth Stewart was tested only once in truth when a Facey header saw him drop to his left and clutch.

Striker Andy Williams was surprisingly booed by the home fans upon his return to Edgar Street. As a player born in Hereford, and with him having had three spells with them, you'd think there would be at least quiet respect for him. I'd be a touch disappointed with that if we did the same to Chris Weale, if he turned up in opposition colours. As it happens, Willo weaved his way through and gave the perfect response to those boos. Bang! And in the ball went into the top corner. Game (almost) over.

Midfielder Dominic Blizzard added to that tally by scoring a little further out than that, but in the same area of the park, when the Bulls allowed him to tee up a shot in acres of space. And that was maybe the difference between the two sides. Neither club managed to really get in behind the back four during most of the afternoon. However, at League One, when you get a player on the edge of the box, you close them down quickly and stop them shooting. Aside from the three goals we did score, Paul Wotton got sight on goal a couple of times from distance, whereas Hereford's attempts, mainly in the first half, were blocked for corners before they got near the goalkeeper or the back of the net.

There is a tendency when you win a match for fans to declare it a 10/10 performance, and when you lose for it to be given a 1/10 mark (if you're lucky). This wasn't absolute brilliance out there, as there were times when the Bulls saw a fair bit of the ball, and at 1-0 I could have seen nerves creeping in if we'd gone into the last 20 minutes with just a single goal to cling onto. However, it was solid, mainly in the middle of the park, and so fitted into a 6/10 or maybe a 7/10 once the quality of the strikes were factored in. A good performance, but with a small caveat that during the rest of the season we won't be playing lower League Two sides in our attempts to stay at League One level.

Not going to attempt to give individual player assessments, as it's hard to pick out people when so much of the game comes down to tackles and effort. Certainly no-one out there did badly, and Paul Wotton had one of his better games for the Glovers. Our ability to nullify Hereford for long periods of the game were the big plus points apart from the goals themselves.

Probably out in the wide positions is where I'd tend to be a bit more picky. The diamond formation inevitably puts pressure on the full-backs to push up the flanks, and that's fine when you have Nathan Jones, Nathan Smith and Craig Alcock in the team. With our current line-up, Max Ehmer and Luke Ayling looked a little bit too much like a pair of centre-backs getting nosebleeds as they tried to cross the halfway line - Ayling coped a bit better, but that's probably because it's a position he's more used to. A team with decent wingers might have caused more problems.

Gareth Stewart looked comfortable, although he did drop one cross in his own box, and managed to make a minor hash of one ball which he palmed out for a corner, perhaps giving a clue to a spot of rustiness. But otherwise he looked solid enough, even if Hereford didn't test him too often during the game.

Today has seen Marek Stech recalled to West Ham United meaning we'll probably be changing keepers yet again for Saturday's League One home match against Exeter City. Yes, Stewart can now be considered to be 'an option' in goal if we don't get anyone in, but given that the rumourmill suggested that the Hammers were looking to recall Stech a couple of weeks ago but were prevented from doing so by FA rules, the club have hopefully had enough notice to bring in another loan.

Overall, the 3-0 win was deserved, and after that 10 game winless run, we'd probably have taken a 1-0 and thanked you for it. One banana skin has been successfully skipped over, but there is now another one in the way, in the form of Fleetwood Town. Forget their non-league position, or the fact that many supporters were saying "where on earth is Fleetwood?" when the draw came out. This will be a team thriving on confidence near the top of the Conference, and with momentum behind them, and from that point of view, despite being a division below the Bulls, will probably present a sterner test.

We'll have to wait and see what the TV companies make of the tie, although if ESPN give us a 12.15p.m. lunchtime kick-off, then I doubt that I'm the only one who will not appreciate the 4.00a.m. alarm call needed to get us up the M6 in time. For that reason, I'm in two minds as to whether us being on TV would be a good thing or not! Expect us to know what ITV and ESPN think sometime around Tuesday.
