6 November 2007 : Football League Review : November 6th 2007
Saturday 3rd of November will no doubt remain a landmark in this year’s League One contest, as Carlisle United condemned Leeds United to the to their first league defeat of the season, just when a few deluded Elland Road fanatics dared to dream that the Whites might go unbeaten all season, à la Arsenal. And Leeds had certainly got off to the better start, taking the lead in the 28th minute through the unstoppable Beckford, now on a par with Northampton’s Andy Kirk, who threw away the chance to add to his own tally at Sixfields, crashing a first half penalty onto the post, before inexplicably fluffing the rebound. In the end Adam Barrett nodded the Shrimpers in front with a powerful header that proved enough to bag all three points.

At the other end of the table, eleven timid Cherries marched out onto the pitch at the Memorial Stadium, knowing that another defeat was no longer an option, and sure enough come the 90th minute the visitors had already begun to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Kevin Bond’s loan coup had indeed paid off, with the young James Henry netting a brace, condemning a depleted Bristol Rovers side to yet another home defeat.

On Friday Swansea had temporarily reclaimed top spot from John Ward’s Cumbrians, in what was a somewhat fortunate start to Mark Stimson’s reign as Gillingham manager – the Gills miraculously hanging on to a point at the Liberty Stadium. The 23rd minute dismissal of home striker Warren Feeney helped the Gills cause, but even then they had to battle for their away point.

At the City Ground, Nottingham Forest sent out a clear message to all of their promotion chasing rivals, putting in a solid 2-0 performance against Tranmere Rovers. A lively Aaron Davies came back into Colin Calderwood’s improving squad, and he almost grabbed the opener on his home debut, sending a sweet volley fizzing onto the crossbar.

Meanwhile the mixed fortunes of the league’s two London clubs continued, as Eastenders Leyton Orient secured a useful home win, piling more misery on lowly Oldham, whereas Millwall slumped to yet another dismal defeat at the New Den, this time at the hands of Anthony Sweeney’s Hartlepool. Whereas Valiants and Gills have now filled their managerial vacancies, it seems unlikely that the Lions will ever find a replacement for Willie Donachie ... hopefully!

Elsewhere Huddersfield cruised to victory against Port Vale - three early goals ensuring that the Terriers were very much in the driving seat by half time. Brighton confirmed their good vein of form at home - Nicky Forster comfortably undoing Luton’s defence on two occasions. And finally Doncaster Rovers came out on top of an entertaining tie at the County Ground against Swindon.

At Gresty Road, Yeovil’s sloppy defending contrasted with Crewe’s efficient game-plan. Alexandra were dominant throughout, and, when 2-0 up, protected their lead effectively, fending off the inklings of a late Glovers resurgence. In the end though it was too little too late, and the Railwaymen deservedly claimed all three points. An unusually deflated first half performance cost the men from Somerset dearly, and at five o’clock they had to settle for 14th place in a league, in which several teams now seem to be picking up speed rapidly.

Tonight Andy Lindegaard and rock bottom Cheltenham Town entertain the Glovers at Whaddon Road, where Russell Slade will no doubt be looking to mastermind a morale-boosting victory. On Saturday the Robins fell victim to Tommy Mooney’s 200th and 201st career goals in a 2-0 win for Walsall, leaving them at the foot of the table, with only ten points out of a possible forty two. However with the season still young, there promises to be many more twists and turns in League One, and needless to say that, like their local rivals, Russell Slade and his Glovers are a long way off throwing in the proverbial green and white towel.
