17 July 2011 : A View From Treyew Road
Back in the depths of time it was common place for Yeovil Town to make trips to Cornwall for forays into the early rounds of The FA Cup competition visiting the likes of Liskeard Athletic and Penzance, however one club that we never crossed paths with was Truro City, mainly because they spent most if not all of that period in The South Western League as opposed to The Western League. Therefore Saturdays trip to Treyew Road presented all with a chance to visit a new ground with 'The Glovers'. The ascent of Truro City has been rapid, coming from step seven of the pyramid to a possible two promotions from The Football League. Instead of entertaining St Austell or Saltash the new fixture list presents 'The White Tigers' with visits from Dover Athletic, Woking and Farnborough Town.

Yeovil Town were last in these neck of the woods a few years back when we visited Bodmin Town and St Blazey for friendlies, Saturdays trip required a near five hour train journey. Leaving at 0811 we arrived in Truro at 12.40 allowing plenty of time to admire the historic cathedral and the not so historic Weatherspoons! A great view of the city itself as well as the cathedral is gained as the trains negotiate the impressive viaduct upon arrival. Arriving at the ground it was evident that Truro have recently added covered seating behind the far goal to marry up with the two temporary stands along the Treyew Road side of a ground that had seen few changes since my last visit a few years back when I watched a Southern League game against Winchester City. The rest of the ground was made up of a low slung seated stand next to the only exisiting area left from their South Western League days, a lean too cover depicting the club name. A smart social club is situated behind the near goal with banking set below where the majority of the home fans appear to gather. Admission was £10 and supporters could enjoy the rare pleasure of drinking from a fair selection of ales as you watched the game from behind the near goal. You dont get that in League One do you!

The home club presented the fixture well, a full glossy programme was on sale (£2.00) and the club shop was doing good trade. Before we had changed ends (Remember that!) Yeovil were behind, Dan Smith scoring via a post after two minutes, ahhh great start .............! The few Yeovil fans present (30 by my count) then saw Andy Williams equalise with a well taken header after seven minutes and this led to a period of dominance that did not yield another goal until Williams turned home his second a minute into the second half. I thought that at times we looked very tidy on the ball in all areas and the players all looked comfortable in possession. A late corner was turned into his own net by Town defender Aaron Lescott to level the scores with seven minutes remaining to take the gloss off the performance. How much we take from this game is as ever open to opinion, although there is no doubt that the starting eleven will change over the coming weeks. Truro had lost at Falmouth Town in their opening game and their manager Lee Hodges would have taken plenty of positives from the game against what he described as 'A very strong Yeovil outfit'.

Truro may not be at this ground much longer if the proposed stadium for Cornwall goes ahead as they would share with The Cornish Pirates rugby side in a 10,000 all seater ground, all in all a pretty good trip even if we did play in that bright yellow away kit which does actually grow on you in a strange sort of way.
