12 July 2011 : Yeovil 2 Inverness 4 : Review Of The Trialists No.2
Yeovil Town played their first 'proper' pre-season friendly last night, after a team of trialists turned out at Dorchester last week. The opponents for the summer’s first match at Huish Park were SPL side Inverness Caledonian Thistle. It was always going to be a tough test for us, especially so early in pre-season, but there were some good signs. Good work from Andy Williams set up Ed Upson to give us the lead and despite Greg Tansey (2), Andrew Shinnie and Ritchie Foran giving the visitors a 4-2 win, we played some good at times, and there were some good individual performances. We played a different side in each half which gave the home supporters a first chance to see the new signings and the trialists. Below is my review of them, as well as those players who are still at the club from last season.

Bertrand Bossu - This is the first time for a while I've seen Bossu play. I believe the last time I saw him he was on the wrong end of a 4-0 Yeovil win during his Hayes days. That probably isn't the best memory to have of a goalkeeper so I wasn't expecting too much from him. And nor did we get it, really. His obvious attribute his is height, and he did well claiming a couple of crosses but he had his share of dodgy moments, too. Hesitation certainly cost us the equaliser as he stayed on is line allowing Tansey to head past him from close range and, although done the other end, I would question his lack of speed in coming out when Ritchie Foran knocked Caley's fourth past time. He couldn't do a lot about the penalty of a very well hit Andrew Shinnie free-kick to be fair, but conceding four won't have filled anyone with confidence. I wouldn't be too happy if we signed him in truth.

Aaron Lescott - I was quite pleased to see Lescott’s name on the team sheet, I thought he was a decent player during his time at both Bristol Rovers and Walsall. He looked pretty decent last night, too, and could be just what we need. You can tell he has bags of experience and he just seemed to slot in pretty easily I thought. I'd like to see him have another two or three games on trial before making decisions but based on yesterdays show, I wouldn't be unhappy if he was in the side at Brentford next month.

Bondz N'Gala - My God, Bondz is big. And I mean BIG. You seriously wouldn't mess with him. We didn't really get too much of a chance to see if he's slow or not over the ground but it looks like he could be very good in the air, and he's certainly strong. Early days yet but has potential to be a good signing, and if Huntington stays I'd like to see them both at centre back as I think they might compliment each other well (although lack of pace could be an issue there).

Jim Paterson - Very impressed by Paterson last night. Much like Lescott, I thought he slotted straight in nicely and you can tell he's got that bit of experience. He was very calm on the ball, always looking to feed the winger in front of him and seemed quite solid. He may not be the quickest but he looks like he'll battle hard and although he didn't get much of a chance yesterday, I can imagine him playing some nice football if he gets to push slightly further forward. Another one I'd certainly hope Skivo will take another look at.

Luke Ayling - You know what you get with Luke, really. He looked just like he did through most of last season. He put himself about well and looked confident on the ball. This is a big season with Craig Alcock having left, and I think Ayling is ready to step forward and make himself one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Ed Upson - Like Luke Ayling, I think this could be the season where Ed Upson really establishes himself. Last pre-season I thought he was maybe one for the future but yesterday he looked very much a big part of the current squad. He knocked the ball around well, and took his goal well arriving late in the box. Could be a real asset to us this season.

Paul Wotton - As solid as always, Wotts is the cog in the middle of pretty much everything we did at times in the first half. His experience is invaluable and he's proving that his age isn't too much of an issue. Almost as importantly as what he did during the game, though, it was interesting to see him take a little bit of the warm up before the match. It shows what influence the captain for the day has within the squad and he could be just as vital a cog in the changing rooms as on the pitch.

Nathan Jones - I don't really think Jonesy will figure for us much again but he did alright in this match. There were, of course, the one or two little step overs which a match wouldn't be complete without and I think him being on the field will have helped out some of the younger players. It could also give him a better view of the trialists, which is of a good benefit to Skivo when making decisions.

Gavin Williams - Like others, I have reservations about the signing of Gavin Williams. Don't get me wrong, he's one of the best players I've ever seen wear the Yeovil shirt and on his day is far too good for League One. But I have slight concerns over his fitness and form. A few more performances like last night, though, and those will be put to bed. He looked good on the ball and seemed to find time and space in the way only Gav seems to. If he build up his fitness and start attacking the edge of the box a bit more, we could have a player similar to the one we knew at his best.

Andy Williams - Last season was a bit hit and miss for Andy, a few really good performances and some key goals were levelled out by some disappointing finishing in big games. He looked alright yesterday, and did well to set up the first goal for Ed Upson. A player who relies on his pace quite a lot will need to build up through pre-season and I'm sure that will happen for Williams, but yesterday was a pretty solid start ahead of what will hopefully be a good season.

Kieran Agard - I was really looking forward to seeing Agard as I'd heard good things about him during his time at Everton. I've got to say, I wasn't disappointed. He looked quick, strong and the sort of player who loves trying to get in behind the defender and through on goal. A couple of very sharp turns almost resulted in goals and he just proved a handful for the Inverness defenders throughout the first half. He showed real potential and could turn out to be a key signing come the end of the season. He looks exciting.

Josh Doyle, Rhys Baggridge & Danny Fitzsimons - Just a quick word on these three, I thought they all looked pretty decent. Fitzsimons needs to make a breakthrough in to the first team at some point this season I think and has shown a few signs that he could do that. He didn't excel last night but he did Okay. The same goes for Baggridge, really; if we do go in to this season with a small squad, he could find himself getting a chance and he's shown some potential to make me think he'd take that chance. Doyle did as you'd expect really, looked like a decent prospect for someone playing against a different level of opposition to he's used to, and it'll be interesting to see how he progresses over the coming years.

Kevin Maher - A player of the kind of experience Maher has could be crucial to us, but I just think last night he showed why I'd rather have Paul Wotton in that role, and why I don't really know if he have a need for Maher. Don't get me wrong, he's not a bad player and can certainly pick a pass but he looked a little bit sloppy at times and made a couple of rash challenges. People have said he could replace Alex Russell but I don't think his movements is as good, and him and Wotton both being on the pitch would mean we get a bit bogged down in the middle. A year or two ago I'd certainly have wanted us to take him on but he just hasn't shown me enough in these two games to make me feel we could play him with, or instead of, Wotton.

Dominic Blizzard - Blizzard was one of what I thought was a number of disappointments at Dorchester last week and was a little bit surprised he was still here to see this friendly. To be fair, though, he did alright. He didn't stand out as doing too much wrong, although the going was tough in a side again full of trialists in the second half. He showed his keenness to get himself in to the box when he found the back of the net for our second goal, which in itself is an obvious attribute. I'm still sat on the fence with this one to be honest. I'd like to see him maybe get given an hour against Bristol City or Cardiff, maybe even both, and see how he gets on there.

Alan O'Brien - When the ball bounced a few yards inside the Inverness half last night, somewhere miles away Alan O'Brien heard it bounce. By the time it had come back down again, he had covered those miles, got in front of the defender and got to the ball first. His almost frightening pace left the defender with little choice but to cynical pull him down. But he's not just another Kevin Gall. He beats his man and he's got an end product; a couple of good crosses should have set up chances, if only we'd had strikers in attacking enough positions. He showed some real promise and could cause League One defences a lot of problems this season if signed.

Anthony Edgar - Despite a poor performance all round at Dorchester last week, I really thought Edgar had some potential. I think last night he proved why I thought that. For periods in the second half, he looked our best player on the pitch. He had some nice touches on the ball, showed a little of flair to win himself from space and skimmed the outside of the post with a shot from range late on. I'm not sure whether his best position is in midfield or up front but he seemed happy doing the Gavin Williams role at times yesterday. With a bit of time to blend in, he could be a very good part of the squad on this showing.

Billy Gibson - I thought Billy Gibson looked a good player on the rare occasions I did get to see him last season, and I think he looked like a good part of the team last night. Quite why it didn't get his chance at times last year I don't know but I really think he could, and probably should, do this year. He looked confident on the ball and seems to be attack minded, which is something we occasionally lack in the midfield. A couple more good performances in pre-season and Skivo could start seeing him as a possible for the first team instead of just someone to warm the bench for most of the season.

Steve MacLean - A few years ago we had Dean Bowditch on trial. He was a player with a proven record in the Football League, a 'proper' striker if you like, and I was excited he was here. I'll admit feeling the same kind of excitement when I saw Steve MacLean on the team sheet yesterday afternoon. When he got on the pitch for the second half, though, he didn't really get the chance to show why. He looked pretty quick and worked hard but for most of the second period, we were more active in defence. When the ball did come to him he showed some good touches, and got himself in good areas in the box and was pretty much our only outlet up front when Edgar went a bit deeper. I think MacLean has great potential for us. He's scored plenty of goals in the Football League through his career, and he isn't at an age where he'd just be seeing out time here. I'd like to see him in other games before I comment too much but I do think MacLean is the most likely good replacement for Bowditch I've heard linked with us yet.

Karl Moore - After the performance in put in at Dorchester I was looking forward to seeing Moore again. He was one of the bright points on an otherwise disappointing evening last Wednesday. Last night was a little different, but he still showed flashes of why I think he'd be a good addition to the squad. Much like Alan O'Brien on the other side, he's quick and has plenty of skill. He also seems to like getting the ball to the byline and pulling it across. He did it once or twice yesterday but the crosses were either blocked or there was no one there to get on the end of it. He did well taking people off, and it was good to see him not be pushed off the ball too easily for someone so small. I wouldn't judge him on that performance alone; I think he could still be a decent player.

All in all, I think most supporters will have left Huish Park feeling a little bit more hopeful about the new season. I'm not getting carried away, there's a massive amount of work still to be done, but I do think we might have some decent players in the squad next season. It's important not to get carried away, though. Sure, it was an improvement on the game at Dorchester but that was a game where none of the first teamers were present and which was played in tough weather conditions. This was a step in the right direction but it's not enough to make me think we're going to overachieve this season.

If Skivo can bring in some of the more promising looking trialists and get people like Max Ehmer in on loan then we could start the season with a decent looking team. Whether we can get them playing well together, competing and most importantly winning remains to be seen but there is at least a base of something we can maybe work on now. Personally, I still think most of the rest of League One are a step or two ahead of us and time is running out for us to catch up before the season starts but we have players who have proven they can play and compete at this level.

The three matches against Bristol City, Cardiff City and Southampton will give us a better indicator of how we're doing and with those not coming until the end of July; we should have a better idea of our squad by then, too. It should be an interesting few weeks either way, and hopefully there's more good news to come regarding signings, even if they are only people coming in on loan.
