6 July 2011 : Dorchester 4 Yeovil 1 : Players Put On Trial
Well, I really hope Yeovil Town aren't starting as they mean to go on. Tonight's first pre-season friendly ended in a 4-1 defeat at Dorchester Town, and the scoreline reflects the game really. A side made up trialists and youth teamers (well, one pro who used to be youth team I think) looked as disjointed as you'd imagine a side who'd never played together would look, and one a wet and windy night in Dorset, they took a comfortable beating. I'll do a proper look back at it tomorrow, but with the game still fairly fresh in my mind I thought I'd look at the trialists and review how they got on. Sorry if some are harsh, but that's football.

Martin Horsell:
Okay so he conceded four to a side a few divisions below where we play but in the first half at least I thought he did alright. He made a couple of fairly comfortable saves and had good command of his box. He wasn't scared to come out for the ball, was vocal and looked fairly confident. He was beaten by twice in that opening 45 minutes - once a header was cleared off the line and one which was curled in to the corner beyond him, neither of which he really had a chance with. For the second half he was down the other end from me so it was harder to judge his performance. Based on what I'd saw, I'd give him another go but I think might fall a bit below the standard we need, even presuming we're after someone to act as a back up to a loan keeper.

Steffan Jones:
I don't know what happened to Steffan Jones in this game, whether he was struggling with the conditions or playing in a side where there was no unity and solid sense of tactics, but he struggled. He was out of position a bit and was beaten to the ball several times. His touch was poor and he seemed unsure whether to push forward or not. The one or two times he did go forward he looked decent and got a cross or two in to the box from very advanced positions but he looked weak at the back.

Imran Baines & Declan Gallacher:
Its hard to judge defenders because they mainly work so much on solid partnerships, and obviously these two are basically strangers. Even though the defence was poor as a unit, I thought there were signs from Gallacher. I'd certainly like to see him given another go anyway, to see how he gets on alongside Paul Huntington or Bondz N'Gala. It was a tricky night for them both, to be fair, but closing down was a particularly weak spot for us.

Rene Gordon:
I thought Rene actually looked pretty decent in patches. I don't think he showed me anything to suggest he's good enough for League One but he had a few nice touches and seemed to like getting forward. I'm not a fan of 'ones for the future' in a sense because we never seem to give them a chance in the first team but if Skivo does want someone to try to mould and work on, Rene Gordon could fit the bill. If he wants first team players, though, on this show at least I'd say there's better out there.

Anthony Edgar:
Much like the defence, I think it was a difficult night for the central midfielders. It was a tricky pitch to play on, with pretty long grass and the ever increasing rain, so it was hard for people like Edgar to show what they can do. I'd like to see him in another friendly, though. I think he showed a few touches but it was very difficult for him.

Dominic Blizzard:
I've heard bad things about Blizzard, but he's a player I thought did well the few times I saw him earlier in his career. Just based on tonight's performance, though, I'd tend to go with others more recent view of him. He didn't do a massive amount wrong or anything, and I think it was him who in fact came closest to a Yeovil goal in the first half when he hit the bar. But he didn't stand out to me when, as a player with League One experience, you'd possibly expect him to. I was at the other end when he was playing so maybe didn't see him as well as others at might be being harsh but I was pretty disappointed in truth.

Kevin Maher:
You can tell he's the kind of player who's always been committed, never held back from a challenge and puts in 100% every week. Sadly, this game passed him by a little bit. He looked quite slow and although he did make a few good challenges, Dorchester still seemed to get through him a lot, and he didn't really offer anything going forward. Experience alone isn't enough I don't think, and Maher didn't show me enough tonight to make me think he's worth keeping hold of.

Alan O'Brien:
The one bright spot of the night, I was impressed by O'Brien. He stood out as one with real professional football experience, and stood out for me above the others in the squad. He's skillful, fairly fast and delivered some very good balls in to the box. His corners caused a few problems, too. His positioning was good, and he seemed happy to run at defenders with the ball at his feet. It was a promising start from him, and I'd like to see him get a start against Inverness to see him in that situation.

Karl Moore:
The other one as well as O'Brien who impressed me. He played out wide and once he got his first run out of the way, he seemed to grow in confidence. He cut inside which caused Dorchester problems and created a few half chances when he did so. I certainly wouldn't say yes, he's amazing, lets sign him but I'd like to have another look at him and hope he just carries on doing what he did today, tactically at least. There's maybe a bit of potential there.

Mark Jones:
I've got to be honest, I didn't see a huge amount of Mark Jones being down the other end but I think he put himself about pretty well and got involved. There were a few times the ball went across the box when you'd have been looking for him to be in the right place at the right time to get on the end of it and he wasn't, but I wouldn't want to be too harsh on him.

I didn't know which all of the subs were well enough to comment to be honest, but I will comment on the ones I did know by name or number.

Substitutes:

Kiernan Hughes-Mason:
A strange one. He showed a few really nice touches, there was some great skill to beat a few players and the shot he had at the end of one of those bits of skill was decent, but the other couple of shots he had were very poor. He maybe pulled out of getting to the ball a couple of times, too, and his off the ball running was a bit strange. When a ball came over the top, he ran wide of the defence to stay onside and get in behind, but he seemed to run too wide, and despite his pace, he couldn't get back in to the middle quickly enough to actually latch on to the pass. You could tell he has something about him but whether it's League One quality, I would doubt.

Alistair Slowe:
Oh dear. I read what Northampton fans had to say about him so was expecting something pretty poor, but probably wasn't expecting something quite this poor. He's just not a footballer. His warm up was brilliantly inept and he looked even more out of place on the pitch. He couldn't run backwards if he was strapped the wrong way round on a treadmill and he ducked out of a header as the ball gently bounced towards him. His idea of positioning is to stand wherever there's the minimum possible chance of the ball ending up, and he has a first touch which makes David Beckham's goal from the half way against Wimbledon look like good close control. He let the ball roll over his foot and out when he did get near it, with me just being impressed he got a toe poke on it as it bounced out over his foot. He did take two throw ins, though. One went straight to the opposition player 6 yards away, and the other, with all the build up of a Rory Delap rocket, was a foul throw which I don't think the ref had the heart to pull him up on. My personal favourite moment was when stood aimlessly pointing at a Dorchester player instead of marking them and then, confusion etched on his face, put the other arm up and pointed at the winger coming from behind him. No one had the heart to tell him he was meant to be marking one of them. I don't want to sound too harsh, I'm sure Alistair is a lovely bloke and I genuinely do wish him well, but even his clothes didn't fit, unless he's been signed from the 70s where shorts were still short and socks were rolled down. I've never seen anything like Alistair Slowe on a football pitch before and, in the green and white of Yeovil Town at least, I hope I never do again.

Lewis Perkins:
I'm not actually too sure if it was Lewis Perkins but as far as I can tell from photos I think it was. This is about our number 18 anyway. He missed a couple of chances, but he at least did well to create some chances and he was good cutting in and taking people on in the box. He's a young lad and still has a lot to learn and if we're being honest, we'd probably gain little from bringing him in to the club as a first team squad member but he's got some ability. I wouldn't mind seeing him in one of the other friendlies, to see how he gets on.

Basically, I'd like to see Alan O'Brien and Kyle Moore start the next friendly at home to Inverness because I think they were the two who showed real potential. I've got to be honest and say I don't think many of the others are good enough. Anthony Edgar is one I think is good enough despite being a bit disappointing tonight, so I'd like him to stay around. There's others as I've mentioned I'd maybe like to see again in friendlies to judge better in a situation where they play alongside first team squad members but none of them stood out as being players I'd want in the side for that opening game at Brentford in a month.

Edited to add - I just want to say, about my criticism of Alistair Slowe, it's not meant as a personal attack. He seems in interviews I've read like a good bloke and I'd never have a go at anyone for chasing their dream. My views on him are purely those of what I saw on the pitch tonight. And they certainly don't go along with what he said of himself in an interview while at Northampton. When asked what sort of player he was, he said - 'Found this quote from the player my harsh criticism was of - ' I’m not one of these Cristiano Ronaldo types who can go past five players and score but I’ve always been good at crossing, set plays, long through balls and things like that – a bit like David Beckham'. Sorry Alistair, but if you're a bit like David Beckham, I'm a lot like Lionel Messi. All the best with your career, I hope you do make it but I have to hope, for the good of the club, that it isn't at Huish Park.

I too was there last night and have spent the day mulling over what I saw. I have to agree with the majority of your thoughts particularly about Alistair Slowe. Probably, the worst player I gave ever seen proporting to be a professional footballer.
However, I think you judgement of Dominic Blizzard is harsh. I thought just on what I saw last night that this guy can play a bit. On a difficult pitch he had a sure touch. Could use both feet. Found guys in green and white shirts with both long and short passes. Got up and down the pitch. Good in the tackle. Had a bullet header hit the bar. I liked what I saw and mused that he could be the player that the Roovers thought that they bought, before Trollop played him on the wing. He'll never be a wide player as lone as he has a hole in his xss, but in a CM midfield role not bad, not bad at all. Might be a gem. Needs to be given another chance alongside PW before I weigh in with the boo boys at the Roovers, who lets be honest would probably have never saw what the lad can do cos he was always played out of position or was sat on the bench. I respect anyone elses view of what they saw on the night but feel the boy did alright and what be worth a second chance at Lge One level.

Am I glad myself and (4 others) are going to support the Grecians from now on!! YTFC has become a joke and as for Skivo -well- give him some cash and he can buy a new computer to tweet on... simply unbelievable when you compare where we were with Sladey/Johnson etc..such a great shame that what used to be a great club has come to this! The rot started when the 3 musketeers got into "management"!
