8 June 2011 : totallygobsmacked.com
Forget about I'm confused.com as they say, I am totally gobsmacked on what the web is both doing and not doing on matters of YTFC. The final count is in for early-purchase season tickets, this year notably without the customary heralding on the Official Site that we have passed the 2,000 mark. Deadline Day for the Early Bird came and went not once but twice, both times with hardly a murmur apart from some 'it's cheaper before it gets more expensive' efforts.

I'm also veryflummoxed.com about the lack of information about our direction for next season, even more so when tieing that up with Skivo's optimism in recent months. Hoping for a stronger squad with mentions of trying to get for example Shaun MacDonald on contract is the sort of positivity I like to see, but on small gates getting smaller such positivity adds to the confusion, especially when the club show no drive or strategy to regenerate the enthusiasm that will increase the attendances that will pay for Skivo's positive agenda, as summed up perfectly by Lector on The Green Room II.

I'm not assuming it won't happen, I have no idea if the club have aces up their sleeve or if they will sell a player for big bucks to increase the manager's budget, or whatever. If they do have a cunning plan they should be marketing it. Which suggests they haven't got one - in that case how on a falling income does the optimism stand up that we can start in August as strong as we finished in May?

Confused? Bloody bewildered, to be frank.

Oh well, we'll just have to keep waiting. Meanwhile though an internet snippet - and this is the gobsmacking bit - no not from the bonkers football rumours site, but on Twitter where a footballer no less has claimed his former team-mate is contemplating joining Yeovil. He is available on a free so fits the bill on that count, but not when it is pacy winger and Dundee United's two-goal hero of last year's Scottish Cup Final Craig Conway, rumoured to have been chased since last year by Rangers and Middlesbrough with mentions of offers around the 600k mark. And with a load of Championship clubs chomping at the bit now the player is out of contract, with Crystal Palace, Ipswich Town and Watford all lining up, it seems a tad unlikely.

The tweet no doubt caused an eruption of laughter at computer screens and sputtering into green and white mugs up and down the land and the first thought from many would have been are you having a laugh? I know that strange things can happen and it seems as genuine as you could expect it to be, so never say never and all that, but my point is that without other clues to guide us it adds to the great confusion we are in at the moment as we feel unsure about what is around the corner. How we could afford a player about whom it is publicly suggested is seeking top wages and attract him to deep darkest Zummerzet I haven't the foggiest, but it has broken up the boredom to stir Glovers from the slumber of under-expectation that the long silence creates.

Skivo has proven since the New Year that he can elevate us up the table given the tools to do the job. If he got a full toolbox, next season would appear a very exciting prospect. The time is here for some words of what route we will follow, not what route we hope to follow. If by some cunning strategy they are one and the same then share the joy and tell us. Either way, it would be great to end the confusion that has us on one hand dreaming of pinching flying wingers from under the nose of Rangers and on the other hand has us doubting our ability to stop Nathan Smith, Dean Bowditch and Craig Alcock following Andy Welsh out the door.

In some form or other, hopefully exciting times ahead.

Update: A further look suggests that the player doing the tweeting got his info even a bit more directly than was supposed - so a bit more weight to it, even more gobsmacked than before ... mustn't jump the gun, but a bit more intriguing than it even was.

I appreciate it is most frustrating for us supporters, but it is patently obvious that the club have made a conscious decision this summer, to keep information about players who may be, or will be, leaving or joining, to themselves, until at least pre-season training commences.

I can totally see why they would do this. These are business arrangements and can be knocked off course if certain information is put into the public arena. Discussions with players and agents can be difficult and good players are wanted by all clubs.

The sensible way forward is to play this in a businesslike manner and let Terry and the club deal with this their way, and privately. We are far more likely to get a good squad, if they can get on with such matters without us supporters and the local media demanding to know what is going on.

That would not happen in business, and we should accept that the world of football, even in League One, has moved on to a different level.

I totally agree, that we should wait a few more weeks, and let them get on with it without distraction, however frustrating that is.

Unfortunately I have lost interest in all thing Yeovil. This apathy to what I used to look forward to and have, like many, spent my saturdays for a number of years doing, is wholly due to what comes out of the club in general and the board room in particular: absolutely c*ck all. Without any enthusiasm for the future coming from that direction how can they expect any to be returned by the paying public. It is abundantly clear that the will to strive for a successful team, and hence club, does not exist within the so called 'corridors of power' and so in my mind Skivo is just being strung along. He is being preyed upon by those who know where his heart is and it is diabolical that they treat such a loyal servant so. His enthusiasm will decline eventually as he continually receives nil support.
So the future is bleak and certainly not green and white!

Frustrating inded - but hardly surprising. We don't need anyone until the friendlies start in July and don't need a 'team' until Season starts in August. Plus - as soon as we sign 'em we'll have to start paying 'em.
The reality seems to be that Skivo will be 'drip feeding' as he said - unfortunately this will not boost Season Ticket sales and means the team is unlikely to have the 'team spirit' to hit the ground running at the beginning of the season - which also doesn't bode well for attendances. Skivo will basically have to start from scratch and it will probably take till Christmas again to think we can shift out of the bottom few. If we are lucky we may steer clear of a Relegation fight but seems more likely we're in for a harder season than last just trying to keep in touch.

Mel - appreciate the point about them getting on with recruitment unhindered but that's not the same thing as marketing exhaustively to increase ST sales and supporting that campaign with a communication strategy. When you refer to 'what happens in business and the world of football moving on to a different level' surely that encompasses such strategy. At the end of the season people knew what the 'product' was, everything was ripe for the club to mend its relationship with the support and keep the boat full steam ahead. As has become the norm, Skivo has done his part in adverse circumstances but too many times he's left rowing against the tide alone. Lack of signings isn't my gripe, it's the club's lack of will to deal with things big and small that could regenerate gate income and to give direction. Even now something could be done, IMO.

Cruncher- I understand your issue with "communication," and of course it could be better. But this club is "punching well above its weight," and it will not be easy, with the competition in League One, to always set out a strategy, in the way you and some supporters would like. There has to be a form of trust in the club, that they will do the right thing in footballing terms. Other issues should not concern most supporters.

I have moved some distance from the area, but it appears to me that the club are doing the very best in very difficult financial circumstances.

If I were still living in the area, I would be getting my season ticket, come hell or high water, and I would support Fry and Co. whatever the reservations, for what they have done for this club since the early 90's.

If you're close to an issue, in this case YTFC, as clearly you are, but not in the inner circle, it can be very frustrating that you don't know what is going on in that inner circle.

That is where the trust comes in. Based on what has happened over the last 14 years, I would trust them.

From what I have seen on this website over recent months, I suspect things are looking quite good and I suspect by mid August, we will be pleased with the summer events, in footballing terms.

As it happens Mel I am also guessing that the squad will be decent and if so they will get deserved credit, but it will still stand as a costly failing (not to be ignored or whitewashed over) that they let the momentum slip after having a re-enthused support as keen as mustard after the success of the second half of the season. And a strange irony if they planned a strong squad all along but sat back and hoped that ST sales would look after themselves. The question now also comes up of how we can afford a strong squad after not boosting the attendance first, although I would hope that at least the gates will rise once the strong squad is in place - not the safe or right way round really to do it, though.

Fair comment Cruncher, I do appreciate your point. But I feel the additional amount of marketing of ST's during May/June that you feel could have been done, would achieve a relatively small additonal return in actual ST's sold.

However you are far closer to the situation than I (in West Sussex) and you can see the additional marketing that could have been done. I would have thought supporters would decide whether to spend the money and commitment themselves without the need for substantial motivation and persuading from the club.

I do miss my visits to Huish Park. We lived near Yeovil from 1996-2004, during which time I missed very few home games, and saw the rise from relative obscurity to great success, for such a "small" club.

Keep the information flowing, you are my lifeline to the club I still love.

Not too close Mel, home games are a logistical problem for me so can't get to many. Appreciate your comments and understand your frustration about missing the regular visits to HP you so much enjoyed in the past. My ramblings are usually based on the single big worry that we don't have enough income and that problem is allowed to drift year after year - time will catch up with that if nothing is done. Unfortunately, life being as complicated as it is, the issue in debate often gets blurred with 'we are a small club overachieving' which is entirely to separate to failing to do something vitally important.
