14 May 2011 : Where Did It All Go Right?
Yet another season done and dusted where we've kept ourselves in League One, in the end comfortably higher above the drop zone than usual and a far cry from mid-season when we were rock bottom on just fifteen points. In December Terry Skiverton was up against it, many if not most of the supporters thought we were doomed and wanted the manager to go. Some of us can be a bit smug and say that we thought Skivo could and would turn it round, but at that low point in bleak mid-winter it was no surprise the majority feared the worse.

We had been persevering with a positive approach but the only consistency we managed was in defensive error and naivety as we either let winning opportunities slip away, notably against Swindon and Huddersfield, or simply put in a woeful performance such as at Notts County and decisively at Bournemouth in late November. There have been mini-transitions across the season but if we are looking for an individual turning point I would define the start of the upturn as the only League fixture (as it turned out) in December and that a dour goalless draw at Colchester.

After Bournemouth Skivo set out his mission from Colchester onwards to concentrate on resolute defence, to sharpen the collective mental attitude and to strengthen the squad. New additions in pre-season such as Paul Huntington and Andy Williams had already proven their worth but the youngsters on loan hadn't made the impact such as the Spurs lads had done in preceding seasons, though what I saw at Colchester of young Leicester centre-half Tom Parkes certainly impressed me.

Overall the squad hadn't been as strong throughout form the start as we would have hoped, and it appeared that a lack of strength in depth in the contracted core of the squad might at last be our undoing. To rub salt in the wound Skivo wasn't getting much luck with referees, missed chances, stupid errors and conceding late goals but after Colchester his revised approach got a huge slice of Donald Duck from the heavens, in the form of snow and frost as the rest of December was cancelled, apart from the compulsory thumping against Hartlepool in the FA Cup who no doubt would like to play us every week. The bad weather allowed Skivo the time to get minds in gear and recharge the batteries, plan his strategy and wish list for the upcoming January Window as well as significantly do a bit of boat-building.

By the New Year the weather had improved and the manager sought to revitalise both the team and the support together under the psychological umbrella of 'we're on the boat.' Frank discussions with his squad and a few chats with experienced wise heads in the game such as Tony Pulis were all part of it, but the key to any turnaround with or without a million boat and sailing puns would always be the number and quality of additions to the squad. Oli Johnson, the experienced Paul Wotton and the unknown Max Ehmer, along with returns for Stephen Henderson and Shaun MacDonald were the manager's wise choices as the Board backed their man against a growing tide of doubt that we could escape from the foot of the table let alone the bottom four. The outcome was an amazing turnaround: Skivo adopted a defensive mindset that saw likely relegation turn into probable safety as a near-flawless January almost doubled our points in just seven matches. And in interviews he took the chance to enjoy himself with every boat analogy under the sun.

What followed at times wasn't pretty and often frustrating to watch with spells of wasted hoofball over the heads of forwards playing very deep. But overall despite a few fluctuations the new resolve was admirable and effective, typified by the 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday despite only having only nine men on the field by the end of the game. And so the ascendancy continued, especially helped with more strengthening additions in Andy Tutte and another return for Jon Obika. An attacking intent returned, a 5-1 revenge on former manager Russell Slade at Orient was especially sweet for the Yeovil manager who had been thumped with five by his old boss when Slade was at Brighton.

Towards the end of the season positivity in the camp increased even further and we finished strongly in mid-table having amassed points since the turn of the year at a rate that was closer to play-off form than that of a relegation threatened club. Note that our away stats over the season of won eight and drawn five match those of fourth-placed score-for-fun Peterborough.

So that's how it all went right and an exciting ride on the boat it has been, it can't be denied. Though in what went right there are clues to what went wrong before it. I had always believed that Skivo would come good, and he has consistently sourced good players on a budget, but last year there was a feeling that he went into the season with the squad that bit too frail and that is what I believe caused him the problems that sunk us to the bottom of the table. Maybe in the long run it has done him good because in digging deep to escape the drop no doubt he will be stronger and wiser for the experience. I hope his bosses will be too.

It's clear that Skivo and Nathan Jones have created a good atmosphere and that they have potential to bring success if they are given the tools, which should include freedom to renew contracts early. Whether we see for example Dean Bowditch or Nathan Smith stay depends on many things as does the question whether we can manage to sign any of the excellent loan players we have been very privileged to see.

All credit to the Board for endorsing that superb crop of players but my plea would be to not start the new season quite as cautious as the last, to make that step that Skivo himself said he wants to happen to sign more contracted players of quality and to fully support this management team to the hilt as much as they possibly can - from the start rather than playing catch-up. A clear choice between planning for struggle or planning for consolidation and improvement.

Before I get carried away, I know it's easier said than done, and I would be sure on recent gates that the outlay on the players signed from mid-season has caused an overspend. I still very much want us to pay what we can afford, but as we seem prepared to overspend if we have to in order to save our skins, the message from the second half if the season must be that planning it for the whole hog could set us up for exciting times ahead - as well as give gates a decent chance to rise if the recent good work can be maintained.

Stagnation is costly. Clubs will be reining back this year and that will level the playing field a bit, but at the point we are at on very low gates it would very much seem that prudency has a limit that if not realised would eventually drop us through the trap door, leaving us with our all round best chance to be a bit braver in advance this time.

We can't afford to forget though how that strategy is now more complicated than ever, what with the club giving land away to the Holding Company and substantial debt secured on the stadium. The hope however of seeing our best players stay and the likes of Ehmer, MacDonald, Tutte, Obika, Henderson and Johnson return is one that would give us massive enthusiasm for the new season, and is no doubt the best chance we've got to rise up and away from what has become a long period of fighting for survival that if carried on would at some time fail. Just how we will plan from here on, I'm not sure, but the way things turned around has certainly increased the appetite for the next season.

I agree...in fact I can pinpoint 3 games this season which we could have, and should have won. 2 against Dagenham and that awful home defeat to Bristol Rovers. The kind of football we played close season and the battling qualities we showed to come back and our 6 game unbeaten run at the end shows that if we can hang on to as many of the current squad as possible, there could be exciting times ahead. There is no reason why we cannot make a top half finish next year or even be on the edges of the play-offs

Great summary of the season. I would have sacked Skivo soon after the Notts County game, which was for me the low point of the season. I am so pleased that would have been a mistake. He has learned during this season and changed his approach to how to get he best out of his players as well as getting more quality players in in January. Well done Skivo. I hope we can either sign some of them or get them back on loan. The club has a track record of looking after and developing young players on loan and I reckon that has not gone unnoticed in the game. There were a few turning points in the season but the 2-2 at Sheff Weds was fab - the pies were rubbish but Yeovil were great.

Very good summary - yes the key moment was the snow break. Gave everyone chance to rest and for Management and the Board to decide whether they wanted Relegation or a chance at survival - luckily they chose the latter. Then Skivo was able to 'get to work' bringing in the key players and work out a style of play that suited.
The worry for next season is that it gives the Board time to evaluate their monies and decide they cannot sustain League 1 footy with the gates we are getting. Hopefully they will be able to conjure a financial plan that will allow Skivo to attempt to get the players he wants/needs - in which case we can look forward rather than back.
I still think this decision is on a knife edge.

Good summary. All at sea/up the creek without a paddle til Christmas. Luckily Skivo swam ashore to launch a rescue boat in the nick of time. All credit to the Management team for engineering an amazing turnaround, including some very good signings.

With this season having been the proverbial game season of two halves, the big question is really how things will progress next season. Why did we land at the foot of the table so badly at Christmas? Was it an attempt to spend as little as we could to get away with it, that backfired? Did the recruitment of higher quality players post-Christmas mean that we were financially pushing the boat out as well as metaphorically?

Then was the tactical change into tighter, less open, Sladesque 'difficult to break down' football post-Xmas a Pulis-influenced bit of advice to moderate the more open 3-3 style football that was seeing plenty of goals, but at both ends? Or a temporary means-to-an-ends to get us out of jail? If we revert back to the "we'll score more goals than you" tactic so that we are seen to "play football the right way" will our squad be good enough to play that football - or do we need to be more pragmatic to pick up points?

Then there was the suggestion that we would go out and bid for the likes of Shaun MacDonald and Jonathan Obika and take them permanently to Yeovil. Was that wishful thinking? Or will there be real intent to hand over transfer fees and the wages and the playing budget that would fund such signings - if so then where would that money come from? And would it keep Dean Bowditch and Nathan Smith?

As I see it, the second half of the season has opened the door and shown what is possible, if a Yeovil manager (and I'd reference Skiverton and Slade here) is allowed to, and is given the opportunity to, build up a strong and in depth squad. If that squad is maintained, then we could have a very different outlook next season (although even our 2nd half of season form wasn't quite good enough for the play-offs). However, if Bowditch, Smith and others leave, and the loanees don't come back, then we're probably looking at more squad reinvention, and more scrabbling around the loan and free transfer market and going through another 35+ players. I'd say we're at a bit of a crossroads on this front, and the next couple of months will tell us which direction we will take.

Agree Badger that there have been confusing messages hinting we could get some of these excellent players on contract especially when some still have contracts to run into next season at their parent clubs, and all the more confusing when we have low gates. As Ramundo speculates, it does appear that the route they take is on a knife edge.

My own repeated preference for the club's transfer policy is to follow the route of finding young, hungry "big club" players whose careers have stagnated in the ressies and beyond, sign them up when they're released, give them genuine league experience and hopefully make a profit.
A similar method worked very well with Cohen, Davies and Peltier although we had them on loan first (not so effective with Danny Hutchins sadly).

Ally a strongly focussed youth recruitment policy to 3 or 4 wiser, older heads (Hunts, Virgo, Wotton for example) to give the team some nous defensively and I think we're on to a potentially effective strategy.

Of course, that assumes the budget will stretch that far!

And for god's sake sign a contracted GK! I don't care if he's #2, I just don't want to rely on loans, emergency loans and coaches! Henderson was, for me, the biggest signing of the season followed by Paul Wotton.

I didn't mind the boat analogies so much but I found the bayonets a bit harder to stomach...

I don't think it is all about the money the board makes available. The likes of Bowditch will only sign again if a bigger club doesn't come in for him. That unfortunately will always be the case with Yeovil. Even when we reached the play-off final Davies and Cohen both left for the bigger club we'd beaten on route. For Cohen it has worked out. They are young lads and want to push themselves as far as possible and we'd all do the same in their position. It just makes it very difficult and frustrating for the manager and supporters having to build from scratch again every couple of years.

A fair review overall. My feelings are that the signing of Paul Wotton over Christmas was the single most effective transaction to make 'it all go right'. I was at Home Park on New Year's day for his debut and his presence was immediately impactive, the midfield had a solidity not there before, with the back line protected from side to side, he was shouting to the players and became almost Skivo-like. If Sam Williams (sorry Sam but you were one of our poorest strikers of recent years)had not grabbed the ball from Wotton (a noted dead ball specialist with Championship experience) for the penalty which he duly missed - we would have had two more points that day and PW's presence would have been amplified. I am in full agreement with your remarks of the importance of Henderson (rightly declared player of the full season), McDonald and latterly Obika (finally left alone by Skivo to lead the attack and not play wide as in the past). Of course the team as whole take great credit for the turnaround after Christmas. I now look forward to next season with PW taking centre stage leading an improved squad. I also agree with other bloggers about the need of the club directors to trust their judgement with contracted players rather than the merry go round of loanees.
