27 April 2011 : Posh 2 Yeovil 2 : A Posh Cracker In The Sun
I really enjoyed Peterborough on Easter Monday in the sun, cracking day and cracking performance topped off with the joy of staying in League One. Approaching kick-off the atmosphere was already good, with the Yeovil lads at the back of the stand as ever playing their part in good voice. Yeovil were confident and positive in all departments from the start, and had a decent chance very early on following a free kick earned by superb work from Andy Welsh - Craig Alcock was expected to put over a high cross into the box but surprised everyone, bar Dean Bowditch, who drifted back to turn and fire Alcock's low pass fiercely at Peterborough keeper Paul Jones.

Yeovil sustained a high tempo, with Shaun MacDonald and Andy Tutte both commanding in all midfield duties; Nathan Smith was quality in his rare stint at centre-back and Nathan Jones slotted in impressively as his replacement at left-back, despite not being involved for months. Max Ehmer was brick-wall solid and any Peterborough intent he read well, but the majority of fluent passing and creative ideas came from the Glovers. Their edge bore fruit halfway through the first period when the two Joneses came face-to-face following a superb left-channel ball from Smith, Posh keeper Paul adjudged to have clipped Yeovil player-manager Nathan. One of those that are not always given, but eagerly accepted by a Yeovil side and support who had seen a load of definites not given to them over both this and last season. Captain for the day Paul Wotton confidently placed a firm shot low into the extreme left of the goal, putting the Glovers deservedly a goal up and ensured League One safety in reach.

The half remained competitive but the home side couldn't find their usual attacking stride against a co-coordinated and pacey Glovers performance, MacDonald and young Tutte outstanding in the middle; and Posh seemingly affected by Darren Ferguson's decision to rest a number of his first-choice players. If anything Yeovil could and perhaps should have added to their tally. Referee Craig Pawson was having a decent game compared with the usual standard we see these days, but he did bamboozle the away support on a couple of occasions when he brought play back after Bowditch and then Jon Obika looked to be racing clear, following free-kicks taken too quickly for the official's liking.

After i enjoyed a good half-time natter with Pete from Gillingham whom it was good to catch up with again, the second half continued with the same pattern, but the frequent warming-up on the sideline of Chris Mackail-Smith & Co kept reminding us that Ferguson was near to bringing on the big guns. And so it proved with half an hour to go, as Mackail-Smith at last joined the fray along with George Boyd and Paul Taylor. Immediately Posh were livelier, but the Yeovil rearguard responded well. Nathan Smith excelled in his unaccustomed role, time and time again the Posh forwards frustration resulted in them fouling him. But, as time wore on, Posh territorial pressure and clear-cut chances increased resulting in Alcock flicking luckily on to the post and some customary Stephen Henderson heroics, and eventually, with just three minutes left, to a Kevin Langmead volleyed goal from a free-kick crossed into the box by Lee Tomlin, our tormentor at Nene Park in 2006.

This is where an enthralling contest really warmed up. In less than a minute we were level. Shaun MacDonald battled for a loose ball and brilliantly played inside for Andy Tutte to fire in from the right across Paul Jones into the far corner. Tutte was ecstatic at getting his first goal and very well-taken it was too, it capped off a superb all-round performance from him. The match though was not in the bag, inside two minutes the frantic finale saw Mackail-Smith grab a close-range goal after Tomlin's corner caused some ping-pong in the Glovers box.

So we ran them close and although it would have been harder to have faced Mackail-Smith and Boyd for ninety minutes this was a good showing and a good point against promotion chasers. We are still in League One, a very big well done to Terry Skiverton for the improvement since December and there is no doubt this side is a talented base on which to build – whether practicalities allow that to happen we can all but hope.

Player Ratings:

Stephen Henderson – 9/10 : We've been lucky to have had some excellent keepers and it could take a month of endless debate to still conclude there's not a fag paper between 'em, but even though McCarthy and Begovic could be destined for big things this guy might prove all round to be the best when comparing their times at Huish Park. Faultless handling was vital yesterday, positioning and distribution good and communicates well and consistently pulls off excellent saves. Just hope not too many notice and we can snap him up on contract.

Craig Alcock – 8/10 : Back to near his best, obviously needed the games I have been moaning that he had in place of Ayling. He does sometimes let the winger through on the outside a bit too easily, I can see the sense in being being extra-cautious not to get beaten on the inside and let a shot through on goal and I would slate him more for that, but on crucial occasions he's just giving a winger the flank and a free cross or a chance to angle in. But well done generally yesterday impressive forward and back against both Boyd and Mendez-Laing.

Max Ehmer – 8/10 : This boy's potential might be better than even we realise – just don't let anyone else realise it for a while and please send him our way.

Nathan Smith – 9*/10 : Astounding performance as stand in centre-back, solid composed and quick . If he was on loan from a premier team we would be touting him for big things, I can't see us holding on to him especially as he's left-sided. I think it'll be a case of wishing him well soon as his ability must have been noticed and being thankful to ex-player Steve Browne for sending him our way for the time we have been lucky enough to have had him. I would love to be wrong and see him stay, just can't see it.

Nathan Jones – 8/10 : Straight into it after months out and a very good performance, has to be an 8 for getting the pen.

Andy Welsh – 7/10 : Good performance, tracked back well and pushed forward well, close to an 8.

Paul Wotton: - 7/10 : Also close to an 8, just about back to how he was. Good pen, being a bit harsh and moaning about him getting a yellow for dissent but it is something we need to stamp out in the team after the way it cost us last week and he is one who should lead the way on that.

Shaun MacDonald – 9/10 : Another magnificent all-round midfield display, hope Barry Fry doesn't get the chequebook out for him.

Andy Tutte - 9/10 : He had shown promise that Skivo might have found another gem, yesterday he has confirmed he is one. Even before his well-taken goal he was having a blinder. Like MacDonald all over the pitch and excellent on the ball.

Dean Bowditch - 7/10 : Worked hard, linked well amazingly consistent first touch to deaden the received long pass, good showing from a good player whom fingers crossed we can keep, but no surprises if we can't.

Jon Obika – 7/10 : Thought he did better than might have been appreciated, linked well and had a good touch receiving balls into feet and chest, and worked hard for the cause.

Subs: Martin Gritton (for Bowditch) – 7/10. Ed Upson (for Welsh) – not on long enough to mark.

Good article -pity we couldn't play to this standard during the rest of the season- but you need a skilful manager who inspires and motivates all season not just in the last match or two! So i suspect it will be de ja vu next season again.

Pretty much agree with the article and player ratings. However Obika was not as effective as I have seen him before and he just did not seem as confident as usual. Smith was brilliant and I totally agree about Ehmer, Henderson and MacDonald. I hope we can retain some or all of these guys. The 4-0 thrashing at Notts County seems a world away now - thank goodness.
