15 December 2010 : The Darkest Hour Is Just Before Dawn ...
... So the saying goes. The problem for manager Terry Skiverton, and for the Board of Yeovil Town is that dawn may yet be some time off. Think things can't get worse after last night's desperately disappointing 4-2 loss at Hartlepool? Believe me, they can. Anyone who was at Huish Park to see the Glovers lose 1-3 to Merthyr Tydfil back in 1994 knows exactly how bad it can get.

Thus far in Skivo's managerial career the Huish Park crowd has, by and large, been pretty supportive of him and the things he's been trying to do. Judging by the postings on the green room II over the last week or so that support is eroding fast. I spoke about a tipping point being reached after the 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth three weeks ago and said then that I thought Skivo deserved the chance to at least stay in charge until January. I've changed my mind now. On Saturday we have a home game against Carlisle United. If ever a game has been a must-win game then this one is surely it. Anything less than three points will be unacceptable.

I'm finding this a hard blog to write. It's not nice to be contemplating the demise of Mr Yeovil, the man who has done so much on the pitch to get us where we are today. But the hard truth is that Skivo as a manager has been found out this season. His team - and it is his team, he's the one who has signed the players and who asked us at the start of the season to judge him on how they performed - has been found wanting in the basics of both attack and defence. It makes me angry and upset to see a good man floundering, but I'm not so much angry with Skivo. I'm angry with the men who have put him in this unenviable position, I'm angry with the Board.

It's the Board who should be looking at themselves today. Yes, by and large they've kept the club solvent, the small matter of a million pound loss in the last financial year nothwithstanding; but it's they who have allowed the club to stagnate over the last few years, who have failed to build on the legacy left by Gary Johnson and Jon Goddard-Watts. It's the Board who have allowed mediocre non-entities to keep positions of influence in the club and who do nothing but alienate fans and take revenue streams and potential revenue streams away from the club. It's the Board who hounded out the previous manager Russell Slade on wholly spurious grounds and then cynically appointed the one man guaranteed to unite the fanbase behind them, even though we all knew Skivo was the cheap option to end all cheap options and that it would probably all end in tears. And now, most cynical of all, it's the Board who have split the land assets of the Huish Park site away from the football operation and have the temerity and chutzpah to tell us that there's no other way to attract new investment into the club. New investment? Don't make me laugh. I could tell you stories, doubtless many of you reading this could tell me stories too about people, fans, potential investors with money, ready and willing to invest in the club in the past but who have always been turned away. And why were they turned away? Because they wanted a say in how their money was spent and our glorious leaders weren't prepared to dilute their power and their shareholdings in the club. Self-interest rules.

Skivo's time is probably up. But this current Board's time should also be up. There's a lot of rumours flying around the town at the moment. I myself have heard from several different sources that offers have been made or are in the process of being made to buy the club from it's current owners. I only hope the rumours are true. John Fry and Norman Hayward have shown themselves to be unwilling and unable to either attract investment to the club or to invest themselves. On top of that they have allowed a culture of failure to thrive at Huish Park. If they have any true feeling for the club then they should dissolve the holding company they have created, give the football club back the land assets they have taken from it, and last but not least, sell up. Go, and go now. Leave with your legacy more-or-less intact. It's time for real change.

Correct! Time for Skivo to go (and some of the board!) Must be worst goals against record Yeovil have ever had! Skivo has shown he is not up to the job- if he hangs on then the misery will be all the greater.Board bear responsibility for appointing himm in first place.People wont pay 15-20 per match to see the sort of footie Skivo's teams produce. Sorry.

I thought about going to Hartlepool, but none of the Leeds based fans were free to go and I was pretty sure we would get beaten so I sat at home and listened on the radio. When fans who have travelled the country can't be bothered, then the Board have got to know it can only get worse not better. Attendance this Saturday will probably be very low. The Board are bankrupt of ideas and it looks like they have hit the buffers. Bringing back old friends (cronies) has done nothing, indeed we have heard no strategy; no vision and no ideas from any of them. Hayward is like the naked King lacking in ideas, no ability to talk to grassroots fans; has no clear forward plan, and is not wanted in Yeovil.

Sensing you might be feeling that 9th placed prediction is slipping away, JM ;-).
Only thing that slightly surprises me is it's taken as long as four years for the complacent/idle/talentless* (* delete as applicable to various board members/placemen/functionaries) in situ at our club to piss away the GJ/JG-W legacy with their inaction, lack of vision, self-delusion and sheer incompetence.
From 2006 to about 2008, I (along with many others I know of) argued and e-mailed and wrote letters to the club about the problems and what needed to be done. All ignored or fobbed off. By 2009 I just shrugged. Now it's simply: sod 'em!
Something of a club will survive from the wreckage visited by this bunch of cronies, and when they have departed YTFC will eventually reemerge - at whatever level they have managed to drag us down to - and start to become the club we love once again.

Unlike the other Yorkshire Glover I went last night. We had the reserves of a very poor League 1 outfit on show last night. One or two of them will make the grade but where was the support from MacDonald and Kalala. These are the senior pros who should be able to do something rather than just take a wage packet. Skivo does need to be relieved- it is his team and they are not performing. Will it make any difference. I doubt it. I see a fair amount of Conference football at York and we are a long way off that standard at present. Will the Board do anything - no they are gutless and self interested.

Agree completely with your cynicism re. the Slade affair. One point you've missed about Skivo's managerial appointment was that it cut short his playing career. Albeit he had struggled with injuries over the past few years but at the time he was only 33 and still one of the best centre-halves in the division. How we could do with one of those now.

Your article is spot on Taff - I could say 'I told you so' but that would only put me in a group of at least 3000 who identified so many issues that needed to be addressed!

When Skivo was appointed I think anyone with half a brain thought it was a half baked lame duck on the cheap appointment that came far too early for Skivo - we hoped for the best, feared the worst and suspected it would all end in tears as it inevitably will.

I would like to end on a positive note but I am really struggling - I think it is going to get a lot worse because I see no evidence that anything will change and there has to be a 50% chance this momentum will not stop and we will be in the Conference within 3 years.

However as HHH writes above - the club will survive and one day will re-emerge in some format, with new stewardship and almost certainly in a different league.

And Yes I second you - change asap please.

I have just reread the above and my earlier comment of 'spot on' does not do you justice. Irrespective of whether or not one agrees with the content it reads very well and is an excellent balance of reason and logic on one hand and anger and emotion on the other which is no easy feat.

Congratulations - it is a beautifully written piece that the subsequent comments confirm has reflects the mood of so many.

Sadly I think Taff is so right. I suspect however that we might have to drop all the way to the conference before someone in the mould of Paul Tisdale can be found to build an aspirational and united young team like Gary Johnson did a decade ago. It's tough to have to ask Terry to go, but great captains don't always make great managers (ask Oxford City about Bobby Moore!!)

The County game was the turning point for me and no more than ten games is enough to know whether any manager is going to get it right. Skivo's team is not going to keep league 1 status. The longer change is delayed the more drastic it has to be to rectify the situation. I don't think there will be drastic change at the club - I think the finances of being in league 2 probably suit the board just as well and they are resigned to league 2 status next season.

Its a FL club in name only, with the people in charge at key levels, ie PR, the hospitality (Appalled at Taffs expieriences) appointed on an old boys/mates basis that has dragged us down continually. The club failed to grab a captive audience when it had one, alienating fans with crap social facilities, over zealous stewarding and this small town "Oh how grateful we are to be here, look how far we have come" attitude. I certainly dont want to spend any time in a mouldy beer tent, confronted by a mass of orange jackets. It was always my opinion that a social club should have been built in the first season we won promotion to maximise revenue streams when times were good and people were flocking to the club. If they had treated their customers with respect when times were good they may just have a few more on board now - but when you employ failed hacks, blah blah ....... no time to stop now.

Well written blog which voices the views of most of us I would guess.

As a once loyal and devoted expat fan (would attend games home and away, listen on the net to those I could not attend, buy shirts/merchendise etc) I have not seen a live Yeovil game this season for the first time in years and have no plans to travel to the UK (waste of my time and money) to watch them in the 2011 half of the season. I am no longer a "customer" of YTFC plc and no longer even read the match reports or the "managers excuses/drivel" after the games.

Maybe it is not Skivos fault, he is in a bad position, but he will be the one to take Yeovil down into LGE2...

Expect mutiny in the ranks and back stabbing and ass covering galore...

I will watch (loosely) from afar and with distain and contempt for the board...

I don't expect wins every game and promotion every season but, for my money, I DO expect effort, unity, passion, hope and value for money... We are currently a long way off....

The general gist is that loyal fans who have been prepared to travel the length and breadth of this land have had enough. The last three or four seasons I have missed just a handful of away games. But this year? Until Colchester last weekend my last away game was that pathetic drubbing at Notts County - a foretast of what was to come..and come...and come. After that game my son was no longer prepared to waste his time at away games again. He's now losing interest in the home games as well, as am I. It's not just the continuous losing but the shocking manner by which Yeovil lose - the Beautiful Game it is not!! And only one small group of self interested individuals are to blame. They can see the writing on the wall and so all they can do is protect themselves by stripping the club of its assetts. They must reccon we are all totally backward. But sorry Gents we can see right through your self interest. Unfortunately, only one person will lose out because they put his head on the chopping block when they took the cheep option. Skivo has not been given the opportunity to learn his new craft and consequently will be the fall guy for something that is not of his doing. Shame on the board for putting in front of him something that they knew he could not refuse - who could?

100% right with that statement Taff; I have been a Season Ticket holder for over 10 years and if Yeovil go down in this manner then this season will be my last ticket. To me it looks like Mr Fry really wants League 2 footie next season at Huish Park. Banking on Yeovil fighting at the top end of League 2, winning matches and bringing back the crowds to Huish Park, Paying League 2 wages. It was not that long ago the gate was 6 to 7000, now look at it now and still dropping. soon if things do not improve I can see the attendance hitting the 2000 mark? With the lack of investment from the Board for players who ARE League 1 standard!Far too many loan players who are there only to get fit and not got their hearts in it for the Glovers, and you can't never have a settled team if loan players are coming and going all the time. You have no real chance of a big Cup run and the extra income that brings in to the Club. It's joke that Yeovil don't own a Keeper I can't see much hope for the Glovers this season. Mr Fry you are playing a very dangerous game as if Yeovil go down this season in this wimpish way then it will be back to the Conference by 2012? Yes time is up for Terry Skiverton, lets get a proven Manager in with a point to prove and before the January transfer Window opens!!!

Well written Chris1 above.

You are right. Employing people is a two way relationship. Employers can rightfully expect a lot from employees. They also have a duty of care and responsibility - to mentor and give employees the opportunity to grow, develop and reach their full potential. It appears to me that Skivo has not been given either the tools nor proper mentoring.

That is some way to treat a loyal employee
