5 December 2010 : Lions Led By Donkeys
I think everyone's probably had enough of the cold weather by now. Certainly everyone at Yeovil Town will have had enough of it. No game for a fortnight and even though we've enjoyed a mini-thaw this weekend (enough of a thaw to make one wonder if the Peterborough game may not have been postponed in a little too much haste earlier in the week), this Tuesday night's re-scheduled 2nd round FA Cup tie at Hartlepool is by no means guaranteed to go ahead regardless of what today's pitch inspection might bring, as a return to freezing temperatures is forecast from tomorrow onwards. [Edit - as I write, the news has just come through that the match is indeed off, re-scheduled for 14th December]

On the other hand, maybe an enforced break was just what we all needed. Time to recharge the batteries, to reflect on the season so far and to put right what's gone wrong. Time for the coaching staff and the players to step back away from the treadmill of game after game after game and to focus on the things they do well and to work on those things that haven't gone quite as well. Time for a fresh start, in other words. Time too, to hit the ground running when football does eventually resume. Lest we forget we are 23rd in the table and 6 points away from safety coming up to the Christmas period. It's going to take a huge effort to make that gap up.

Away from the football and I'm sad to report that once again the club has proved that it has difficulty in organising a piss-up in a brewery. A group of ten of us booked a table at the club last night - a 3 course dinner and Abba's Angels, in honour of my sister-in-law's birthday. Unfortunately when we got to the club we found that the lift to the top floor was out of action which meant that I, as a wheelchair user, was unable to access the Alec Stock Lounge. It was explained to us that the lift had broken down the previous day, an engineer had attempted a repair that morning but didn't have the part required. We asked why the club hadn't contacted us after the engineer's visit to tell us not to come because they knew that a wheelchair user would require access to the Lounge via the lift and they also knew that the lift was out of order, but no-one could answer that question.

Well, these things happen. In the event a charming young lady - the head waitress I think, though unfortunately I didn't get her name - dealt with myself and my wife with great courtesy, gave us a refund and went further than that by giving us a bottle of wine and plated up our dinner for us to take home. Kudos to her and her staff, who all seemed genuinely embarrassed and upset. In the meantime and after much discussion we persuaded the rest of our party to carry on and enjoy the evening, accordingly they went upstairs to claim their table, whilst we made our way back home with our wine and our dinner.

Except that when the rest of our party got upstairs they found that their table wasn't actually there. Despite two previous vists to the club; once to put the dinner order in and once to pay for the evening, as well as a phone call from the club to my sister-in-law to confirm the booking; on the night there was no record of their order. My brother, by now angry as well as Amazed, confronted the catering manager, Mr Robinson, and demanded an explanation as to why no-one had contacted us to tell us the lift had broken down, and how had they managed to lose all trace of our party's food order not to mention the table booking? Mr Robinson claimed not to have a contact phone number to ring, forgetting, perhaps, that he himself had phoned my sister-in-law earlier in the week to confirm our booking and to confirm that he was aware that a wheelchair user was included in the party and that a space would be left on our table to accommodate. He couldn't explain how the dinner order and table booking had gone missing.

To cut a long story short the evening was by now irredeemably spoilt. A refund was demanded and given and everyone left. We never did see Abba's Angels and the club missed out on £300-worth of ticket money plus another £100 (at least!) that would have gone behind the bar. More to the point, the attitude and evasions of the catering manager has ensured that none of us will return for a function at the club, at least while that particular gentleman is still in his post.

In the great scheme of things no harm was done. No-one died or was injured and all we lost was an hour of our time. But the whole episode is symptomatic of the decline of our club. The poor bloody staff doing their best to provide a service led by an incompetent management who couldn't care less. Only at Yeovil Town FC could such a culture thrive. Change at the top to get rid of the dead wood is so badly needed that it's not even funny, not anymore. Is there no-one out there who can save us?

Whilst it is very disappointing to hear of your experience with Mr Robinson, it is certainly not surprising.
As a VP (we like a drink, NOT prawn sandwiches or green blazers I hasten to add), his performance regularly comes under scrutiny. Most weeks see numerous 'bad' pints returned, box holders complaining about late or missing meals and most sadly of all, staff getting grief directed at them for things that are not their fault.
Many feel Robinson himself has a drink problem (excuse the pun), apparently is is a health issue. Whatever the reason, it smacks of either the 'old pals' bit or cheap labour. I know of more than one Company that in previous seasons have regularly sponsored a game, but in direct response to the poor matchday offerings, no longer do so. We regularly see 'adverts' highlighting games available for such sponsorships, but in years gone by, there used to be a lengthy waiting list. Like many other things, officials within the Club know the problem but seem unable, or unwilling to do something about it.
We can only hope that there really is a serious game plan to all this that really will benefit OUR CLUB.
Sadly the most patient of optimists really are being put to the test!

Unfortunately this sort of tale is fairly symptomatic of our club at present. Well-meaning and helpful staff let down by failings higher up the (food) chain. Then a senior management/board level that will do nothing to correct those failings, even though they happen all too frequently.

We've been regularly and actively plugging the Huish Park Events Guide since it was produced, in the hope of getting people into the habit of going up to the club on non-matchdays as it is precisely that sort of 'habit' that is needed in order to turn Huish Park into a regular venue and source of income over and above the one-a-fortnight experience. The club needs that money to bridge the gap between itself and the other clubs in League One. It is absolutely paramount that it succeeds.

However, such events are no good if they are bodged and if they serve to score own goals in terms of how the club is perceived. We know that this is an area of the club where there have been long-standing complaints made about its current running yet no action has ever been taken to resolve it - or at least nothing that has worked. We know the club are aware of these failings, because the record of them exists in the numerous ABUFP/CCM meeting minutes. Yet change never comes.

The £300 - £400 quid lost as part of the above experience is the tip of the iceberg. It is the long shelf life bottled beer that runs out of stock on a match day and thus is never sold, the punters who then never bother to queue in the next match because they know stock/quality is unreliable, and it is the punters who decide not to turn up to the next event because they were so disillusioned with their experience of the last.

Ultimately, the lost income ripples its way through to the Playing Budget of Terry Skiverton because that is ultimately where the pinch is felt. The next time Skivo tries to sign a player, but finds himself £400 quid short of the player's agents demands and thus doesn't get the player he needed, where did the problem first start?

This is where the Pavlovian response by football fans to call for the first team manager's head each time results go downhill can be flawed, because all areas of the club (or indeed any business operation) are interlinked, and each can succeed or fail by the actions of another. The adage "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link" is a good one for a business to consider, when trying to eliminate failings. At some point, if the those at the top of the club are not to stand by and watch the club fail, then they will need to - in true Anne Robinson style decide "Who is the weakest link?" and then deliver the legendary one word retort.

This typifies the running of Yeovil Town Football Club at the moment from top to bottom. I have great sympathy with you. Skivo and some of the board should all be looking for a job!
Turning to the football- the naive and ridiculous comments by the manager that "he is going thru a sticky patch... and that he will put things right... and is not worried" beggar belief! Skivo jolly well should be worried! No doubt if we end up going down- he'll still hang on to his job.......at least lets stop him making stupid comments... I know he is just trying to make a terrible situation look good but even the most loyal supporter isn't fooled!

To be fair to Skivo you wouldn't expect him (or any other Manager) to say anything much different. You would hardly expect him to say "yes I'm worried, we are deep in the doggy do do and we haven't got a hope in hell of staying up", even if he genuinely believed that to be the case.

I run a business and I have previously sponsored games at the club but I can no longer bring myself to do it because of my frustration with the small mindedness of the club.

The problem I have with contributing further to the club's funds is that all businesses have a brand and the other brands that businesses associate themselves with send messages out about the core brand. Hence a brand like "Red Bull" associates with Formula 1 racing and Red Bull get huge benefits from the relationship. Red Bull gives you wings and we just won the world championship. Buy these drinks and associate with our brand. Do you want to associate with the club at the moment?

So what does Yeovil's brand say to any of us?

I'll make a few suggestions. Directionless. Strategyless. Amateur. Sinking. Stinking.

Is it any wonder that the crowds and revenues are down. I admire the fact that in the past the club has stayed solvent but I can see no way forward with the current senior management in place. Yes it would be great to have an Ambramavich take the club over but if we can't have that can we at least have some people in charge who have enthusiasm and a vision that we can all be proud to be associated with.

At the moment don't be surprised if we go bust and drop down a few divisions. If the people running the club had anything about them they might even make a comment here.

Sadly TSF, you are one that has genuinely tried to help 'OUR CLUB' and taken flak for doing just that. You have tried, but sadly not had the 100% support from within that your efforts deserved.

To be fair, I didn't see anyone give TSF flak for his efforts in producing the Huish Park Leisure Guide. Or at least, as someone who contributed to that thread, that was about as far away from my intention as it is possible to get. I think there was a fair bit of debate in terms of the role of volunteering at the club, but more from the angle of when they should get involved rather than whether they do good work. FWIW bar the odd typo, which I think just needs an independent proofreader to get involved, it was an excellent start and shouldn't be discouraged. And of course the problems that Taff, Amazed and others experienced are nothing to do with the vehicle that was used to promote it.

The recruitment policy within the higher levels at HP seems to have a reoccurring theme.

Employing people who are so inept that they make the likes of Emperor Fry look semi-competent.

If this downward trend continues as well as dropping like a stone through the leagues we will be staring administration in the face in he not so distant future.

Yes, it was the questioning of the need to 'get involved' which led to TSF having to defend the Club that I was referring to. I can certainly empathise with him there, but that's another story! Most definitely his efforts are to be much commended, but he may well be feeling 'why did I 'effin bother!'

Surely when an organisation is as incompetent as YTFC the responsibility rests at the door of the Chief Executive and the board generally. What has been achieved since the CE arrived. Things have gone down hill. There is no vision. Its time for change the CE should go and the Chairman should step down and the majority shareholder should decide if he is really interested in the club or not.

John Fry, is a man who likes nothing more than telling anyone who will listen how great his achievements are, a classic example of Illusory superiority. His gravest error, and it is the error of many chairmen, is to play to the gallery. Surrounding himself with less competent people thus appearing to making his own ability higher than it is.

Yet, what is there to cling to at Huish Park these days? Little, beyond the whim of an owner who has never deigned to explain his decisions to his paying public. If Fry is a man with a plan, he is content to keep it secret. Though it is damn obvious, there isnít a plan.

Sorry that Taff and Amazed and families had to go through that. As many have warned, JF will destroy the entirety of his reputation if he remains to be stubborn. Maybe that point is passed. Those that support him and NH must stop finding the choice a difficult one between matey loyalty and logic. Support for the present owners has been support for bad components of the club that the owners endorse - it is not separate.
