08/06/2010 : Where Are They Now? : Summer Scrapped For Former Loan Stars
8 June 2010 : Summer Scrapped For Former Loan Stars
Two of Yeovil Town's former loan stars are finding the idea of putting their feet up by the pool whilst on their summer holidays is not quite on the agenda. Both are undergoing fitness programmes throughout the close season in an effort to help shake off injuries and niggles that gave them grief during the 2009-10 season. Gareth Owen and Jonathan Worthington were popular signings during the 2008-09 season and are currently with Port Vale and Oldham Athletic respectively.

Central defender Gareth Owen has been suffering from back and hip problems over the past few months and had to have glucose injections to strengthen his tendons prior to the last game of the 2009-10 season. He has been receiving physiotherapy at Vale Park twice a week, but is confident that the programme of work will see him fit when pre-season commences in anger:

"They've given me exercises to do, and I've been going in twice a week since the season has finished. We've got to the bottom of it and I'll be fit and raring to go. I've done so many pre-seasons now, I know what tides me over and what keeps me ticking, so that I'm in relatively good shape for the start of pre-season. I tend to stay off the running until a couple of weeks before we go back because it gives your joints time to recover. There will be plenty of swimming and rowing, and anything else that gets your heart rate going."

Owen also managed to fracture his cheekbone last November, aggravating the same injury a month later. Despite that, the 27 year old is hoping to extend his stay at Vale Park. Owen has played 59 games for Vale since joining from Stockport in November 2008 - a move that curtailed his seven game loan spell at Yeovil Town during the previous month after the Glovers board refused to sanction an extension to Owen's loan deal. Despite still playing at League Two level, Owen has said that he would like to extend his contract with the Valiants, which still has 12 months to run:

"I've said all along that I'm happy and proud to be playing for Vale. I know we're in League Two, where you don't usually get long contracts, but if the club wants to extend my deal, then great. If Real Madrid or Chelsea came calling I may have to think twice, although I don't think they will at my age! If my deal isn't extended, I'll still give 110 per cent and hopefully my performances will take care of themselves. As long as I keep playing well, there can be no complaints."

This may well be a marriage of convenience for Owen and Port Vale - he was born in nearby Cheadle and lives in Blythe Bridge. Aside from football, Owen has been keeping himself very busy despite his recent injuries. He helped raise more than 1,000 for the Help For Heroes charity after he ran in a 10 kilometre road race at Kingsway in Stoke in 36 minutes and 5 seconds. The charity is one close to his family's heart - his brother is currently on active service with the Royal Engineers. On top of that, he spent last season studying for his UEFA Level Two Coaching Badge as well as taking a Sports science degree course at Manchester Metropolitan University. Owen certainly can't be accused of being a lazy footballer.

Whilst on the subject of Port Vale it looks like striker Craig Davies will not be joining them permanently. Davies, who is another former Glovers loan signing, played 24 times for the Valiants last season, whilst on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion. However, the 24 year old still has a year to run on his Seagulls contract and Valiants boss Micky Adams says that as a result he will not be looking to make the deal permanent, despite Davies facing a season in Brighton Reserves. Adams explained:

"I couldnt afford him. He did fine for us. He scored a few goals and played really well but he has gone back now."

Heading further up the M6, midfielder Jonathan Worthington has also made the decision to take part in summer physio and training schedules after he missed five months of the 2009-10 season with an ankle injury. He made his return to Oldham's first team squad in mid-March, but admits to their official site that he spent much of the remainder of the season playing catch-up in terms of his fitness:

"It was a frustrating year and, when I returned, I never got back to the fitness levels I am capable of achieving. I purposely went on holiday immediately the season finished to get it out of the way so I could spend the rest of the time working on my fitness. I will be working on strengthening my ankle as well as doing other fitness work in the gym as well as on my own at home."

As soon as the season ended, Worthington decided to head out to Aruba in the Caribbean with his girlfriend Catherine and get his summer holiday done and dusted, so that he could come back early to sort his own personal fitness levels out and says that he is not the only one who has decided to do this at Boundary Park:

"I had more than enough time off last season and it is important I am in good shape for when pre-season training begins. It is great that I can come in and train with two or three other lads rather than working on my own. When you are training with other players, it helps push you on and makes you put in that little bit extra."

Whilst on the subject of Oldham, they are due to announce the successor to former manager Dave Penney tomorrow, in a press conference at 10.00a.m. They chose their man last week, but have had to delay the formal announcement because their new manager was out of the country. Unofficial speculation has suggested that former Manchester City striker Paul Dickov is the man in question, with the 37 year old being spoken of in the media as if he's already landed the job, although there's been no official confirmation from the Latics as yet. All will doubtless be confirmed or denied tomorrow morning.
