30 January 2006 : January Transfer Window Round-Up No.9
Just 24 hours before League One fans can either heave a sigh of relief or cry into their beers. The January transfer window officially closes at midnight tomorrow (Tuesday night) although for Football League clubs the deadline may well be 5.00pm. During the last transfer window, staff at the Premiership worked up until midnight to accept late transfer dealing, but those at the Football League's office worked a normal day and therefore all transfers had to be recorded by 5.00pm. There has been no obvious indication of whether the same imbalance will apply, but it seems the most likely situation.

Matters are still relatively quite around League One with many clubs around the league reporting that they are likely to settle for what they've got. Swansea City have finally off-loaded one member of their bloated squad (and by bloated we don't mean Lee Trundle here) with striker Paul Connor signing a 2.5 year deal with League Two promotion challengers Leyton Orient. Connor's options were proving to be increasingly limited after the Jacks spent over half a million pounds during the transfer window, with Leon Knight and Rory Fallon taking up most of that. With Trundle and Akinfenwa also on their books, Connor stood little chance of a start, meaning that Gary Johnson's former Yeovil transfer target will now drop a division.

Leicester City winger Jason Wilcox has signed a permanent deal with relegation-threatened Blackpool until the end of the season. In reality this is a case of the Tangerines keeping what they have already got, with the 34 year old having arrived at Bloomfield Road in November. He arrives on a free transfer.

Another loanee turning into a permanent transfer is Aston Villa's Steven Foley. He has signed for AFC Bournemouth for 20,000 pounds, committing himself to a 2.5 year deal. The 19 year old has already played 25 games for the Cherries and their assistant Richard O'Kelly said of the deal: "Steven's been very instrumental in the way we've played. He's got a great left foot and works the ball well. We thought we might have lost him at one stage, but we can't thank the people at Villa enough."

Striker Trevor Benjamin has joined Swindon Town on loan for the rest of the season, as the 26 year old prepares to play for the 12th club of his career. He is currently on Peterborough's books and Glovers fans may recall him featuring for Northampton Town last season.

Bristol City have put the collapse of the Jermaine Easter deal behind them by capturing Luton Town striker Calvin Andrews on a month's loan. The 19 year old can also play as a left-winger and Gary Johnson has said of their new signing: "Calvin is strong and quick and is also very mature. He can play in more than one position is also an attraction. He has a fierce desire to succeed and that is the sort of player I want in my squad."

Of course the Glovers themselves have shipped out Luke Oliver over the weekend for 15,000 pounds to Conference side Stevenage Borough whilst Bradley Thomas arrives on a free transfer from Conference South side Eastleigh (see stories in the previous days).

However away from League One, one of their former loan players Martin Gritton has left Grimsby Town and headed to Lincoln City for a nominal fee, signing a deal that will keep him until Sincil Bank until the summer of 2007. Gritton has been a regular in Grimsby's side this season, but having only scored two goals so far this season, he has not built on the early promise he showed for Russell Slade's side.

Finally Al-James Hannigan has been spotted still playing football in London - he has moved from Enfield to Enfield Town who are playing at Southern League Division One East level. The 35 year old was in his fifth (yes, fifth!) spell with Enfield but has now moved to the town's off-shoot club, formed after a group of Enfield supporters expressed dissatisfaction with the running of the original Enfield club. Perhaps Al-James may find it difficult to knock up his sixth spell with that club in a year's time.
